Refueling in Spain Now Hits Your Wallet Why Rising Prices Scare Even Seasoned Drivers

Spanish car owners in shock fuel prices rise by €21 in two weeks

Fuel prices in Spain have soared in just 12 days—refueling popular cars now costs up to €21. But what’s most alarming: this may not be the limit. Why even longtime drivers are rethinking their routes—and what comes next?

In March 2026, Spanish drivers faced a sharp surge in fuel prices, which immediately affected household budgets. In a short time, the cost of both petrol and diesel rose so considerably that even filling up a compact car has become noticeably more expensive. The impact is especially significant for owners of the most popular models, where the price difference for a full tank reaches double-digit amounts.

According to recent data, 95-octane petrol increased from €1.495 to €1.707 per liter, and diesel—from €1.447 to €1.830. This means that filling a standard tank now costs €7–12 more for petrol cars and €14–21 more for diesels compared to the beginning of the month. This jump is linked to tensions in the Middle East, as already discussed in the article on forecasts for fuel prices in Spain (details on causes and outlook).

Top 10 models

The list of best-selling cars in 2026 includes Seat Ibiza, Dacia Sandero, Toyota C-HR, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Toyota Corolla, Seat Arona, Nissan Qashqai, Toyota Yaris Cross and MG ZS. For each of these, the rise in fuel prices means extra expenses at every refueling. For example, filling a Seat Ibiza with its 40-liter tank now costs €68.28 instead of the previous €59.80—a difference of €8.48. If the model were diesel, the extra payment would reach €15.32.

Dacia Sandero with a 50-liter tank now comes to €85.35, up from €74.75, which is a difference of €10.60. For the diesel version, the extra cost would reach €19.15. Toyota C-HR and Toyota Corolla, each with 43-liter tanks, now require €73.40 for petrol (an increase of €9.11) and €78.69 for diesel (up €16.47). Peugeot 208 with a 44-liter tank—plus €9.33 for petrol and €16.85 for diesel.

Fuel expenses

Filling up a Renault Clio (39 liters) now costs €66.57, which is €8.26 more, while the diesel version is €14.94 more expensive. The Seat Arona, which has the same tank as the Ibiza, shows similar figures. The Nissan Qashqai, with the largest tank (55 liters), now requires €93.89 for petrol (an increase of €11.66) and €100.65 for diesel (an extra €21.06). The Toyota Yaris Cross, with the smallest tank (36 liters), comes to €7.63 more for petrol and €13.79 more for diesel. The MG ZS matches the figures of the Qashqai.

Overall, refueling these models has become noticeably more expensive for owners. Even with infrequent trips, the monthly difference can exceed €40. For families with multiple cars, expenses rise even further. According to russpain.com, this price trend may continue if the geopolitical situation does not stabilize.

Market impact

Rising fuel prices are already affecting buyer behavior. Many are considering switching to more economical or hybrid vehicles. Some dealerships report growing interest in low-consumption models. At the same time, owners of diesel cars are in the most difficult position: the difference in refueling costs compared to petrol is now the highest in recent years.

Experts believe that if this trend continues, the market may see a faster shift toward alternative types of transport. For now, most drivers are forced to adapt to higher costs by changing their usual routes and reducing how often they travel.

The Seat Ibiza is one of the most recognizable cars in Spain and has been among the top sellers for many years. This model is known for its reliability and affordable maintenance. Thanks to its compact size and fuel-efficient engine, the Seat Ibiza is often chosen for both city driving and long-distance trips. As fuel prices continue to rise, such cars are becoming even more popular, as every liter becomes increasingly valuable for drivers.
