Rodalies passengers lose time as train delays in Catalonia hit record levels

Barcelona faces more travel disruptions due to new Rodalies train delays

Major disruptions continue on Catalonia’s rail network. Rodalies trains are experiencing delays of over 30 minutes. The situation affects thousands of residents and may further drive passengers away.

Catalonia’s railway network has once again come under scrutiny due to major train service disruptions. On Sunday morning, delays of more than 30 minutes were registered on the Rodalies R1 and R4 lines, sparking frustration among passengers and raising questions about the reliability of the region’s transport system. For residents of Barcelona and the surrounding areas, such disruptions mean not only lost time but also added difficulties when planning trips, especially when alternative routes are overloaded.

According to El Pais, a technical malfunction between l’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Sants station in Barcelona was the cause of the delays. As a result, R1 trains must now start and end their routes at Sants, with passengers advised to transfer to the R4 line to bypass the affected section. Experts say this measure only partially addresses the issue, as it increases pressure on other lines and creates further inconvenience for daily commuters.

Alternative routes

The situation is also complicated on other lines. On the R8 line the same day, a temporary bus service ran from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. between Martorell Central and Rubí Can Vallhonrat, later extended to Mollet San Fost. From there, passengers can take the R2 line to Granollers Centre. These changes require travelers to closely monitor schedules and be ready for unplanned transfers, which is especially inconvenient for those rushing to work or school.

Ongoing disruptions in the railway network have already led to a noticeable decline in ridership. According to Renfe, from 2018 to 2024, Rodalies lost nearly 43,000 weekday passengers, with total daily users dropping to 358,000. In January, when delays peaked, Generalitat estimated that passenger numbers fell by a third. These figures confirm that trust in the Rodalies system continues to erode, as more residents seek alternative ways to get around.

Impact on the region

Railway issues affect not only Barcelona but the entire Catalonia region. For many suburban residents, Rodalies remains the only accessible form of transportation, and any disruptions directly impact their daily lives. With road infrastructure also under strain, a mass shift to private cars could increase traffic congestion and worsen the environmental situation.

As El Pais notes, such incidents are becoming routine, and solutions offered by transport companies are often temporary. Regional authorities are forced to seek new approaches to upgrading infrastructure and improving the reliability of rail services. Against this backdrop, other major infrastructure projects are being discussed that could affect regional development, as seen recently with compensation for land in Benidorm — the city is preparing to pay a record sum to Serra Gelada landowners.

Trends and consequences

Ongoing disruptions on the railway in Catalonia have become one of the main transportation issues in recent years. Looking back at similar incidents, it is notable that in 2025, the region already experienced mass delays due to technical failures on the R2 line, which led to the temporary cancellation of dozens of services. At that time, passengers also had to switch to buses and seek alternative routes, and transport companies faced a wave of criticism. Such events highlight the urgent need for investment in infrastructure upgrades and the introduction of modern train management technologies.

In recent years, Spain has debated transferring the management of suburban railways from the central government to the autonomous communities. According to experts, this move could speed up modernization and improve service quality. However, passengers of Rodalies are still facing delays and forced transfers, while Catalonia’s transport system remains under pressure from the region’s growing public expectations.
