A shootout broke out on Sunday morning in the small town of Casar de Escalona (Toledo province) between members of the GEO special police unit and suspected members of a criminal gang. Officers had arrived to detain suspects linked to the distribution of illegal substances. However, the operation quickly escalated into an armed standoff right on one of the town’s streets.
When police tried to stop three men, they opened fire with pistols. The special forces responded immediately: as a result of the shootout, one of the attackers was killed on the spot and two others sustained varying degrees of injury. Preliminary reports indicate all three were connected to a Dominican-origin group long suspected of organizing drug distribution channels.
Local residents became witnesses to events that disrupted the quiet routine of their municipality. Bullet marks remained on the streets, and the area was cordoned off by police. The operation is part of a broad campaign to combat drug trafficking, which has intensified across the country in recent weeks.
This incident is already the second in a short period where the arrest of drug trafficking suspects has led to serious consequences for both sides. Just a day earlier, in another region of the country, a police officer was seriously injured while surveilling a drug group. In both cases, the criminals were armed and did not attempt to flee; instead, they engaged in an open confrontation with law enforcement officers.
The injured parties are now under guard in the hospital, while investigators continue to clarify all the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities emphasize that combating organized crime and illegal drug trafficking remains one of the top priorities for Spanish law enforcement.
