A debate is intensifying in Spain over potential changes to migration policy. Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the Popular Party, proposed introducing a new visa system for foreigners. The idea is to assess candidates based on points awarded for professional skills, knowledge of Spanish culture, and willingness to integrate.
According to the politician, priority should be given to those who intend to work in sectors facing labor shortages. The evaluation will also consider how well applicants are familiar with Spanish traditions and their ability to integrate into local society. Another criterion will be the country of origin’s cooperation with Spanish authorities in regulating migration flows.
Feijóo believes the current system is too vulnerable: he claims that many people now arrive illegally, with no intention of working, and later obtain residency papers through settlement and receive social benefits. According to the opposition, this puts pressure on the state budget and hinders the effective integration of new residents.
In recent times, migration has become one of the most contentious issues in Spanish society. Earlier, the VOX party called for stricter measures against migrants who break the law or impose their religious views. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized that without an influx of foreign labor, the EU economy may face serious difficulties or even stagnation.
The discussion on new approaches to visa issuance and migration regulation is ongoing. This issue is expected to become one of the key topics for Spanish politicians and society as a whole in the coming months.
