Spain Faces Heatwave and Unstable Weather in the North and Galicia

Temperatures break records while the north is drenched by rain: what’s happening

In the coming days, Spain will experience a combination of heat and unstable weather. Temperatures in central and southern regions will rise above 32 degrees, while the north will see rain and thunderstorms. Weather conditions are expected to fluctuate throughout the week.

Spain is entering a period when heat and rainfall split the country in two. Starting Thursday, temperatures will begin to rise, and by the weekend, central and southern regions can expect truly summer-like heat. In some areas, thermometers will climb to 34, and in places even up to 36 degrees, especially in the Guadalquivir valley (Guadalquivir).

However, the situation is different in the north and northwest. In Galicia (Galicia) and along the Cantabrian coast (Cantábrico), the sky is overcast and it rains periodically. Thunderstorms are possible in certain areas of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, which may be quite intense. On Wednesday, there is still a chance of heavy downpours in the eastern Balearics and some parts of Catalonia.

By the end of the week, precipitation will persist in the northern regions, while the rest of the country will see dry and hot weather. On Friday and Saturday, temperatures in central and southern Spain will exceed 32–34 degrees, with some places in the Guadalquivir valley reaching up to 36 degrees. Meanwhile, in the northern regions and on the Cantabrian coast, the weather will remain cooler, with occasional rain and cloud cover.

On Saturday and Sunday, local thunderstorms cannot be ruled out in the northeastern areas, including the Pyrenees, Catalonia, southern Aragón, and the north of the Valencian Community. Elsewhere in the country, clear and hot weather will prevail, especially in the center and south, where the heat will continue into early next week.

The Canary Islands will experience strong trade winds, cloud cover, and light rain in the north of the mountainous islands over the next few days. By the weekend, temperatures will start to rise, reaching 32-34 degrees in the southern areas of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. According to forecasts, the hot weather will persist on the archipelago after the weekend as well.
