Spain is experiencing an unusual weather pattern as the week draws to a close. While most provinces are seeing temperatures more typical of September, some regions are preparing for rain and thunderstorms. Weather alerts have already been issued from Thursday in the northeastern areas due to potential rainfall, and the upcoming weekend may bring even more surprises from the weather.
The center and much of the peninsula are currently under the influence of an anticyclone. This brings clear skies and dry air, with daytime temperatures continuing to rise. The warm-up is especially noticeable in the Ebro Valley, inland Cantabria, and northern Castilla y León. In some cities, temperatures are expected to reach nearly 30 degrees, which is hardly typical for October.
Meanwhile, brief showers are possible along the Catalonia coast and in the eastern Canary Islands, according to forecasters. On Saturday, rainfall may also affect the northern coast of Cantabria. The inland areas of La Rioja, Navarre, and Castilla y León will enjoy an almost summer-like atmosphere, while Galicia and eastern Catalonia could experience localized cooling due to clouds and humidity.
Nighttime temperatures will remain steady, with mild nights except in the high mountains of the Pyrenees, where light frosts are possible. In Catalonia, especially in Barcelona and northern Tarragona, warnings have been issued due to the likelihood of heavy rain falling in a short period. On the coast of Valencia and around Alboran, clouds and light precipitation are also possible, but these will be sporadic. In the Balearic Islands, brief showers are possible in the afternoon, especially in mountainous areas.
The Canary Islands will also be affected: clouds and light rain are expected on the northern slopes, while in the eastern parts of the archipelago, instability may increase due to the arrival of moist subtropical air mass. This could bring thunderstorms and moderate showers, especially over the weekend.
Sharp contrasts between cool nights and hot days will create conditions favorable for fog formation. Fog may appear in the north, southeast, central regions, and in Catalonia. In Galicia, especially in the Rías Baixas area, fog might reach inland, reducing road visibility in the morning hours.
On Friday and Saturday, sunny and warm weather will persist almost everywhere. However, in northern Cantabria on Saturday, brief showers are possible due to changes in air circulation. Overall, the weekend will feel more like an Indian summer than the start of autumn, with sunshine and high temperatures prevailing in most regions.
