Spain Faces a Wave of Heat and Precipitation Across Different Regions

Andalusia, Valencia, and Catalonia: Where the heat is, and where to expect rain and storms

Spain is once again experiencing sharp weather changes. Some areas are recording high temperatures, while others are expecting rain. Meteorologists are warning of possible weather-related risks. Details on the situation in the country’s regions.

Spain is once again experiencing unstable weather conditions. While central and southern provinces are seeing summer-like high temperatures, rain and thunderstorms are forecast for the north and east of the country. The national meteorological agency warns of the likelihood of heavy downpours in some areas.

In particular, significant temperature increases are expected in the Valencia region and the Pyrenees. In Valencia, thermometers could reach 38 degrees, prompting heat warnings for the area. At the same time, the northeast, including Catalonia, northern Aragón, and inland parts of the Comunidad Valenciana, are expected to see local thunderstorms and brief but intense rainfall.

In some areas of the Pyrenees and eastern Iberia, rainfall could exceed 20 liters per square meter over a short period. Alerts have been issued in the provinces of Girona, Tarragona, and Castellón due to the risk of heavy rain. After prolonged periods of heat, such precipitation could lead to sudden rises in river and ravine water levels.

In the north, in Galicia and along the Cantabrian coast, the morning will begin with clouds and showers brought by Atlantic weather fronts. In the Pyrenees of Navarra and northern Galicia, thunderstorms may recur and intensify overnight.

Throughout the day, fog and low cloudiness will persist along the Atlantic coast in Galicia. In the afternoon, strong gusts of wind are possible on the eastern coast of Cantabria, especially in open areas, where wind speeds may exceed normal levels for this time of year.

In contrast, the central and southern regions will continue to experience clear skies and very warm weather. In Andalusia, temperatures in the Guadalquivir valley will exceed 35 degrees, with nighttime lows not dropping below 20 degrees, especially on the Mediterranean coast and in some inland areas. Murcia and Almería are also expected to see a noticeable increase in temperatures, reaching 36-37 degrees. The Balearic Islands are forecast to be sunny and hot during the day.

The Canary Islands archipelago will see more stable conditions, but with local variations. On islands with mountainous terrain, cloud cover and light showers are possible on the northern slopes, particularly on La Palma. The rest of the archipelago will remain mostly clear, although the trade winds will intensify, and very strong gusts are possible at higher elevations.
