Spain Introduces New Rules for Vans and Delivery Starting in 2026

How new rules will affect commercial drivers in cities and on highways

From 2026, vans and delivery vehicles will be required to use the V16 beacon when stopped. The new regulation applies to anyone obstructing traffic. Find out how it will affect drivers.

Starting January 1, 2026, Spain will implement a new requirement for all commercial vehicle drivers, including vans and delivery cars. During stops for loading or unloading, if the vehicle is obstructing the road, drivers must use a special V16 warning beacon. This device will replace the traditional warning triangles that have long been the main way to alert other road users about obstacles ahead.

The mandatory use of the V16 beacon has been introduced to improve road safety nationwide. This is especially relevant on city streets, busy routes, and highways, where vans and delivery vehicles often have to stop in undesignated areas. The new rule applies to all types of roads, including urban, intercity, and high-speed highways.

New requirements

Under the new rules, the V16 beacon must be placed in a clearly visible spot—most often on the roof or on the upper part of a side window. The driver is required to activate the device immediately after stopping if their vehicle partially or fully occupies the roadway or shoulder. This applies not only in emergencies but also during routine tasks: deliveries, loading, unloading, or addressing minor breakdowns.

Motorcycles and scooters are an exception: their owners are not required to use the V16 beacon, although it is recommended to have one on hand. If transporting hazardous materials and the journey through Spain is in transit to another country, old warning triangles are still permitted. However, in all other cases, the V16 beacon is the only allowed signaling device.

Safety comes first

The main goal of the new regulation is to reduce the number of accidents and injuries on the roads. The V16 beacon is visible from up to one kilometer away, allowing other drivers to spot obstacles in advance and slow down. This is especially important in poor visibility conditions, at night, or during rainy weather when traditional warning triangles may be less effective.

Commercial vehicle drivers delivering goods must now take the new requirements into account when planning routes and stops. Violating the rules can result in fines, so it is recommended to purchase a V16 beacon in advance and familiarize yourself with its instructions. The device runs on batteries and does not require complicated installation, making it easy to use in any situation.

Impact on operations

For companies involved in delivery and logistics, the introduction of the mandatory V16 beacon means they will need to revise internal protocols and train their staff. Drivers will have to get used to a new set of procedures whenever stopping for loading or unloading. In major cities, where traffic is particularly heavy, this rule could provide an additional layer of safety for both workers and other road users.

Overall, the transition to the V16 beacon is seen as a step forward in the evolution of Spain’s transport system. The new device has already received positive feedback from safety experts and representatives of transport companies. With improved visibility and ease of use, the number of accidents involving commercial vehicles is expected to drop significantly.
