The Spanish government has once again found itself at the center of controversy following the publication of correspondence involving the aide to the Prime Minister’s wife. Public attention was drawn to emails sent from a personal account, which referenced contacts with eleven companies. Despite this, Moncloa does not believe there is anything improper in the aide’s actions.
Authorities emphasize that this is a private initiative, unrelated to official duties. According to officials, such services are provided on a voluntary basis, and the correspondence mainly involved organizational matters. The government insists that neither the Prime Minister nor other high-ranking officials were mentioned in these emails, meaning there is no evidence of influence on state decisions.
During the investigation, more than a hundred emails were reviewed, provided by a former vice-rector of one of Madrid’s universities. Only a portion of them was included in the official report, and, according to government sources, most of the messages were routine in nature. Representatives of the executive branch believe that attempts to find violations in this case are nothing more than efforts to fabricate the appearance of a scandal where none exists.
Particular attention is drawn to the fact that the assistant worked with the prime minister’s wife for many years, and her duties were clearly defined. Authorities note that Begoña Gómez had only one personal assistant, which, in their view, rules out the possibility of official duties being assigned to other individuals. The government also points out that similar support has always been standard for the families of the country’s top officials, and sees no reason to reconsider this approach.
At the same time, the need for clear regulation of the roles of state leaders’ spouses is being discussed. However, according to officials, now is not the time to create new structures while the investigation is ongoing. The government is confident that the review will prove Begoña Gómez’s innocence, and emphasizes that all actions of her assistant complied with established rules.
