Ten Best Natural Pools in Burgos for a Summer Getaway

Dónde bañarse en Burgos: rincones sorprendentes para los días calurosos

The province of Burgos offers unique natural pools that serve as a great alternative to the beach. We highlight ten of the most scenic spots for swimming and enjoying the outdoors — from mountain rivers to reservoirs and waterfalls.

The province of Burgos is renowned for its diverse landscapes, featuring both mountain ranges and wide plains. Hidden throughout the region are true natural oases, where you can swim and relax in the shade of the trees without having to travel to the coast. We have compiled ten of the most interesting natural pools and reservoirs in Burgos, which are especially popular during the hot season.

In the north of the province, in the village of Espinosa de los Monteros, the Trueba River forms a clean and cool pool thanks to a small dam. There are picnic and rest areas set up nearby, while dense greenery provides pleasant shade. This spot is ideal for those seeking solitude and a swim in a natural setting.

In Arija, there is an unusual beach for Burgos on the shores of the Ebro Reservoir. Here you’ll find sandy shores and a gentle entry into the water, making it safe for families with children. The beach is suitable not only for swimming but also for water sports such as kayaking or paddleboarding.

Not far from Covarrubias is a place called El Piélago. This tranquil stretch of the Arlanza River features clear, transparent water and banks shaded by trees. It’s a favorite spot for families who prefer a quiet atmosphere and shallow waters.

In the Rudrón valley lies the famous Pozo Azul in Covanera. This natural pool is known for its intense blue color and its underwater cave, the longest in Spain. You can reach the site on foot or by car, with a short walk of about 300 meters. The place attracts nature lovers and underwater explorers.

In Orbaneja del Castillo, water from a 25-meter waterfall forms several natural pools among limestone rocks. This is one of the most picturesque spots in the Valle de Sedano, although swimming is prohibited to preserve the unique ecosystem.

In the mountains, within the Lagunas Glaciares de Neila Natural Park, the Palazuelo stream creates small pools and waterfalls. A hiking trail of less than six kilometers leads to them. Due to the elevation and water temperature, only the bravest attempt to swim here.

A few kilometers from Burgos lies the Arlanzón reservoir (Pantano de Arlanzón). There are nearly 130 hectares of open water and 15 kilometers of shoreline. The water comes from the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, so it always stays cool. The area is suitable for swimming, water sports, and relaxing away from the crowds.

Near Arlanzón is the Úzquiza reservoir (Embalse de Úzquiza) in the municipality of Villasur de Herreros. This is a more secluded spot where all types of non-motorized water activities are allowed. The swimming area is marked by buoys, and all around is peace and nature.

In the Las Merindades area lies the impressive Cascada del Peñón waterfall in Pedrosa de Tobalina. Here, the Jerea River forms a wide and tall cascade, at the foot of which spreads a large natural basin. A mill once operated here, but today it is a popular spot for swimming in the summer.

Right in the center of Villarcayo is Parque del Soto, located on the banks of the Nela River. In summer, part of the river is dammed, creating a spacious and deep pool. There are lawns, a beach, a dense grove, and bars on both sides of the river. This is one of the most popular swimming spots in Burgos.

These natural pools and bodies of water in Burgos are an excellent alternative to sea beaches. They let you enjoy clean water, beautiful landscapes, and tranquility without leaving the province.
