A tragedy occurred on the Almería coast on Monday morning: two men who arrived by boat died, and two others were hospitalized with serious injuries. The incidents took place in different parts of the province, and law enforcement authorities are currently investigating to determine the full circumstances of what happened.
The first alert reached emergency services at around 4:40 am. On the N-340-A highway near Vera, a man was found in need of medical attention. Preliminary reports indicate he had arrived on shore by boat. The injured man was taken to La Inmaculada Hospital in Huércal-Overa, where the body of another migrant was also found. According to police, his death was not due to drowning, and the cause is under investigation.
The second incident happened several hours later at Cala Carbón beach, near San José in the municipality of Níjar, close to the popular tourist areas of El Monsul and Genoveses. Around 8:30 am, witnesses reported an unresponsive person and another injured man on the sand. Both had reached shore by boat. Officers from the Guardia Civil, local police, and medical personnel arrived at the scene. One of the men was pronounced dead and his body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for examination. The second victim, in serious condition, was airlifted to Torrecárdenas University Hospital in Almería, where he remains under medical supervision.
Authorities do not yet have precise information about the number of people who were on the two boats that arrived this morning, nor about the causes of the migrants’ deaths. The investigation is ongoing.
Such tragedies on the Almería coast are not unprecedented. In March this year, a 25-year-old man died here after arriving with a group of about twenty people at Cala de Enmedio in Níjar. Most of the migrants fled at the time, but eight were found and received assistance; one was hospitalized and another died on the shore. Just days earlier, another young man drowned off Los Muertos beach after arriving with a group of 22 people. The others were taken to the Temporary Accommodation Center for Foreigners at the Port of Almería.
According to the Andalusian Association for Human Rights, more than 4,200 migrants arrived on the Almería coast in 2025, which is 2,000 fewer than the previous year. This accounts for about 75% of all those who arrived by boat in Andalusia, as noted in the “Southern Border” organization’s report.
