A new political scandal is unfolding in Valencia: the region’s Socialists are demanding that Alberto Núñez Feijóo, head of the Partido Popular, provide the court with all correspondence with former president Carlos Mazón during the DANA disaster that struck on October 29, 2024. According to PSPV-PSOE representatives, the current PP leader is not fully cooperating with the investigation and is withholding information that could be crucial to understanding the circumstances of the catastrophe.
Feijóo is scheduled to testify in court on January 9 but has already expressed his intention to do so remotely. The day before Christmas, the party announced it had handed over to Judge Nuria Ruiz Tobarra the messages received from Mazón. However, the list did not include messages that Feijóo himself had sent to his colleague. PP representatives explained this omission by claiming that the judge supposedly did not request them directly.
Doubts and Accusations
According to a notarial record, the correspondence began at 20:08 with a short reply from Mazón: “Gracias Presi,” thanking Feijóo for his words of support. By that moment, the storm was already ravaging the province of Valencia and the death toll had reached tragic levels. This fact, Socialists say, contradicts Feijóo’s statements that he was aware of the situation from the very beginning and was promptly informed by Mazón.
In one of the messages, Mazón writes directly: “Un puto desastre va a ser esto presi,” which translates as “This is going to be a complete disaster, president.” The Socialists insist that if Feijóo truly wants to clarify all the details, he must provide not only the incoming, but also the outgoing messages. Otherwise, according to PSPV-PSOE, this is an attempt to hide the truth and manipulate the facts.
Questions for Feijóo
In their statement, the Socialists emphasize that such selectiveness in providing information appears to show an unwillingness to cooperate with the judiciary. “Valencians are asking what Señor Feijóo is trying to hide,” the party notes. In their view, this behavior demonstrates disrespect for the victims of the tragedy and for society as a whole.
Furthermore, the Socialists accuse the PP leader of lying: allegedly, he assured local residents that he was aware of the events since October 28, while in court documents he claims he got the date wrong. According to PSPV-PSOE, this was no accidental slip, but a deliberate attempt to confuse the investigation and cover up the actions of the regional government.
Reaction in Parliament
Alicia Andújar, deputy and secretary of the DANA investigation committee in the Corts Valencianes, sharply criticized Feijóo for trying to withhold part of the correspondence. She stated that the PP leader had protected Mazón for an entire year and now is not providing the court with all the necessary information. “Why is he hiding his messages? What is Feijóo afraid of?” Andújar asked.
According to her, this is not a simple mistake, but a deliberate concealment of data that could shed light on the authorities’ actions at a critical moment. The Socialists are demanding an end to the practice of providing incomplete lists of calls and messages, insisting on full transparency.
Political repercussions
PSPV-PSOE believes that Feijóo and his party are trying to evade responsibility for the disaster, which has become the most significant tragedy for the Valencian Community in recent years. The Socialists emphasize that the public is tired of half-truths and demands honest answers from politicians who aspire to lead the country.
The scandal over the correspondence between Feijóo and Mazón continues to escalate, with calls for complete transparency growing louder. Ahead lie interrogations, new documents, and possibly unexpected twists in the DANA tragedy case.
