Starting January 1, 2026, a new rule takes effect in Spain: only special V16 beacons with data transmission capabilities can be used to signal accidents or breakdowns on the roads. Traditional warning triangles and light signals without network connectivity will be outlawed. The new devices must not only emit light, but also automatically send the vehicle’s coordinates to the DGT 3.0 platform to improve road safety.
For a V16 beacon to be considered legal, it must meet a number of strict requirements. First, its casing must display an approval code (LCOE or IDIADA with a number) issued by an accredited laboratory. In addition, the device must be included in the official list of approved beacons, which is updated regularly. The light signal must be yellow or amber, flash or blink, and offer 360-degree visibility of at least one kilometer in good weather conditions. It’s important that the beacon operates for at least 30 minutes after activation.
Device requirements
The key difference with the new beacons is an integrated data transmission system. When activated, the device automatically sends the vehicle’s location to the DGT 3.0 server. This requires a SIM card or eSIM to be built into the beacon, with connectivity costs already included in the price for a minimum of 12 years. Drivers won’t have to pay extra for data transmission.
The installation of the beacon is also strictly regulated. It must be mounted at the highest point of the vehicle, most often on the roof or at the top of the driver’s side. The attachment must be magnetic and able to withstand any weather conditions — from rain and wind to snow and dust. This ensures that the device won’t come off even during strong gusts of wind or heavy rain.
List of approved models
Currently, several models of V16 beacons are officially approved for use in Spain and can be purchased on Amazon for up to 38 euros. All of them are included in the current list authorized by the DGT. Among them are the V16 beacon from Isse Safety, the S21 model, and the MegaLed device. Each has been certified and fully meets the new safety standards.
Amazon Prime subscribers receive free shipping on all orders and can also take advantage of a free 30-day trial period. This makes it easy and cost-effective to purchase the necessary device without leaving home.
What drivers need to know
Switching to the new V16 beacons isn’t just a formality, but a legal requirement. Starting in 2026, using the old triangles or light signals without being connected to DGT 3.0 may result in fines. Therefore, drivers are advised to check in advance whether their device complies with the new regulations and replace it with an approved model if necessary.
Before purchasing, make sure that the chosen beacon is officially listed by the DGT. You can verify this by checking the approval code on the device itself and by reviewing the information on the manufacturer’s website. Only these certified devices ensure both safety and compliance with Spanish road regulations.
