In 2025, the youngest daughter of the King of Spain, Infanta Sofía, embarks on a new and important chapter in her life. After completing the International Baccalaureate program at UWC Atlantic College in Wales, the 18-year-old princess is preparing to pursue higher education. She has chosen the prestigious Forward College, where she will study political science and international relations.
The decision to study abroad was expected, but the choice of location remained a matter of intrigue. The program lasts three years and will take place sequentially in three European capitals: Lisbon, Paris, and Berlin. This format meets two key requirements set by the royal family: studies should not be too far from Spain, allowing the Infanta to attend official events, and the chosen field should be beneficial to the Crown in the future.
Infanta Sofía will spend her first year of studies in Portugal. The Forward College campus in Lisbon is located in the heart of the city, in the historic and bohemian Chiado district. The college’s four-story building stands on Rua das Flores, just steps away from the famous Praça de Luís de Camões and the Baixa-Chiado metro station. This will be her home for the upcoming academic year.
The Chiado district is considered one of the most elegant and culturally vibrant areas in Lisbon. Its atmosphere transports visitors to the Belle Époque era, with streets steeped in history. Most buildings date back to the late 18th century, many of which were carefully restored after the devastating 1988 fire under the direction of renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, a Pritzker Prize laureate. The area is famous for its classical theaters, concept stores, and cozy cafes.
Landmarks of the Portuguese capital are located in close proximity to the infanta’s place of study. Among them are the Gothic ruins of the Carmo Convent (Convento do Carmo), left unrestored after the 1755 earthquake as a memorial to the tragic events. The district is also home to the Chiado National Museum of Contemporary Art and the famous Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa). Of particular note is the Bertrand Bookstore (Livraria Bertrand), founded in 1732 and listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest in the world.
Everyday life in Chiado promises to be vibrant. The district’s main artery, Rua Garrett, is a hub for fashion and gastronomy enthusiasts. This is home to the famous café “A Brasileira,” frequented by the poet Fernando Pessoa, as well as numerous restaurants, from Michelin-starred establishments to traditional taverns serving authentic Portuguese cuisine. Its proximity to the lively Bairro Alto district provides easy access to the city’s nightlife. Thus, Infanta Sofia’s first year at university will unfold surrounded by Lisbon’s rich history, culture, and dynamic atmosphere.
