The Spanish royal family’s summer vacation in 2025 has once again become the focus of public and media attention. The whereabouts of King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, remain the main intrigue of the season. While the Royal Household traditionally does not disclose details of the monarchs’ private trips, some information has nevertheless leaked to the media, sparking a wave of speculation.
The only confirmed fact so far is the destination — Greece. This information became public after reports on the movements of a Falcon jet from the government fleet, requested by the Royal Household. The flight departed Spain for an airport in the Macedonia region of Greece, after which the royal family’s trail went cold. Both international and Spanish media are actively discussing the possible location of Felipe and Letizia.
The main theory, supported by many outlets, including the American magazine People, links the Spanish royals’ holiday to the Dutch royal family. It is believed that King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima invited their Spanish friends to their luxurious residence in Kranidi. The friendship between the two royal houses strengthened significantly after Dutch Crown Princess Amalia spent some time living in Spain. However, it should be noted that this theory currently lacks direct evidence and is based on sources’ assumptions.
The second popular theory points to close family ties with the Greek royal family. Queen Mother Sofia, born Princess of Greece and Denmark, as well as the infantas Elena and Cristina, regularly visit Greece. The relationship between Queen Letizia and Marie-Chantal Miller, wife of Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece (Pablo de Grecia), noticeably warmed after their meeting in Athens in 2023. This opens up the possibility for King Felipe to vacation together with his cousin Pavlos. Recently, one of Pavlos and Marie-Chantal’s sons, Aristidis (Arístides), posted a photo on social media confirming that the family is spending August on the Greek coast. They may be staying on the island of Spetses, not far from the former residence of King Constantine in Porto Heli (Porto Heli).
There is also a third possibility: King Felipe and Queen Letizia may have decided to rent their own secluded villa with a yacht to ensure maximum privacy. This would allow them to enjoy the sea, scenery, and local cuisine, as well as meet with friends—such as the monarchs of the Netherlands—without unwanted attention. This option would give the king, an avid sailing enthusiast, complete freedom of action.
Notably, Greek waters have also become a popular destination this summer for other European royals. Recently, paparazzi spotted the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, aboard a megayacht owned by a member of the UAE royal family. Queen Camilla was also seen in the region, vacationing on a yacht belonging to a Saudi billionaire. This concentration of high-profile figures further underscores Greece’s appeal as a private getaway.
Meanwhile, commentators point out that, despite the tradition of not interrupting private holidays even in the face of tragic events, the current large-scale wildfires in Spain could prompt changes to the royal family’s plans. Their early return would signal a nationwide emergency. However, even in such a situation, the exact location of their vacation is likely to remain a closely guarded secret.
