In recent years, Spain has seen a steady increase in interest in environmentally friendly vehicles. According to ANFAC, by the end of 2024, only 1.6% of cars on the country’s roads were electrified. Despite this positive trend, the figure remains far from the target 40% already under discussion in some European countries, such as Norway.
Analysts note that if the share of electric and hybrid vehicles reaches 40% in the future, this will bring about major changes in the market. First of all, there will be mass closures of fuel stations specializing in traditional fuels. In addition, service centers maintaining internal combustion engines will gradually go out of business, as electric vehicles require significantly less maintenance. For instance, they do not need regular oil or spark plug changes.
Another potential consequence will be a possible shortage of spare parts for petrol and diesel vehicles. As their numbers dwindle on the roads, manufacturers and suppliers will reduce production of these components. Experts also predict that insurance premiums for owners of traditional cars will rise.
So far, these changes are affecting mainly countries where the transition to eco-friendly transport is happening faster. In Spain, however, the process is gradual. In 2024, 125,185 new electrified vehicles were registered, accounting for 11.4% of total sales. At the same time, there was a slight decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous year. Of these, 65,478 vehicles were fully electric, while 59,707 were plug-in hybrids.
In 2025, the situation changed: more than 150,000 electrified vehicles have already been sold in the first eight months, exceeding last year’s figures. In August alone, 16,085 new registrations were recorded, of which 7,786 were electric cars and 8,299 were plug-in hybrids.
Thus, Spain is steadily moving towards increasing the share of eco-friendly transport, although it is still far from the European leaders. Further changes in the structure of the automotive market and service infrastructure are expected in the coming years.
