Norway’s national team confidently crushed Israel 5-0, with Erling Haaland starring as the match’s hero by scoring a hat-trick. This result not only strengthened Norway’s position in the qualifying group but also put Italy’s participation in the upcoming World Cup at risk.
From the opening minutes at Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo, the Norwegians seized the initiative. As early as the fifth minute, Haaland had a chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot, but Israel’s goalkeeper Daniel Peretz saved his strikes twice. The first miss was annulled due to a rule violation, but even the retake was unsuccessful for the striker.
Despite his misfortune from the penalty spot, Haaland quickly regained his confidence. In the 18th minute, Alexander Sørloth broke down the wing and crossed into the box, where Israel defender Osher Halaili deflected the ball into his own net. Just minutes later, Sørloth again played a key role by delivering a precise pass to Haaland, who converted with a shot into the far corner.
Israel never recovered from the opponent’s early onslaught. After halftime, Haaland scored twice with headers, finishing crosses from Antonio Nusa. The visiting goalkeeper could not save his team, and Haaland brought his tally for the national team to 51 goals in 46 appearances.
In the remaining time, Norway controlled the course of the game and did not allow their opponents to create any dangerous chances. Strand-Larsen’s goal was ruled out for offside, while Israel failed to mount a challenge.
The victory allowed Norway to collect the maximum number of points and all but secure a spot at the World Championship. Italy, now trailing by nine points, will have to win their remaining matches and hope their rivals slip up to avoid the playoffs.
