Pamplona, the capital of the autonomous region of Navarra in northern Spain, is one of the country’s oldest cities. It is located at the foothills of the Western Pyrenees, on the Arga River, a tributary of the Aragón River.
The municipality is part of the Cuenca de Pamplona district. Pamplona is famous for the San Fermín festival, held annually from July 6 to 14 and described in Ernest Hemingway’s novel ‘The Sun Also Rises (Fiesta).’ One of the main traditions of this festival is the encierro — the running of men through the city streets ahead of charging bulls.
Pamplona is home to two universities: the University of Navarra and the Public University of Navarra. The region’s archaeological and artistic heritage is displayed in the Museo de Navarra. Since 2004, Pamplona has hosted the international documentary film festival ‘Punto de Vista.’ The city is also renowned for its encierro.
The football club Osasuna is based in Pamplona, playing home matches at the Estadio Reino de Navarra, which seats 19,800 spectators.
