5 minutes and electric cars are transformed Why Flash Charging scares competitors

BYD меняет правила игры: быстрая зарядка избавляет от главной тревоги

BYD challenges conventions: a five-minute charge isn’t just convenient, it’s a threat to the established market. Those who lag behind risk being left in the past. Why this new technology could change everything—and what’s behind the impressive numbers

The introduction of BYD’s Flash Charging technology could completely change the perception of electric vehicles. Owners can now forget about long stops at charging stations: it takes just 5 minutes to recharge the battery up to 70%. This is more than just speeding up the process — it’s a real step towards making electric cars truly convenient for daily use and long-distance travel.

Previously, the main obstacle to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles was not so much the cost or range, but the lengthy charging times. While prices for electric cars are gradually dropping and new models can already travel over 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, many potential buyers were deterred by the wait at the charging point. Now, things are changing: Flash Charging promises to boost the battery from 10% to 97% in just 9 minutes, and in temperatures as low as -30°C, from 20% to 97% in only 12 minutes.

Technology and capabilities

The new solution is based on a combination of the second-generation Blade Battery and the Flash Charging system, which can deliver up to 1500 kW through a single connector. This approach not only speeds up the process, but also makes it stable regardless of weather conditions. Even in severe cold, charging remains efficient, which is especially important for northern regions.

BYD is actively investing in developing its own technologies: over 100,000 company employees work in research divisions. As a result, the Blade Battery 2.0 features 5% higher energy density, which has boosted its range to 1,000 kilometers based on the Chinese CLTC standard. For comparison, the European WLTP standard usually gives more conservative estimates, yet even by those numbers the results are impressive.

Infrastructure and scaling

In China, 4,239 Flash Charging stations are already operating, and BYD plans to increase this number to 20,000 by the end of the year. A special energy storage system ensures stable operation: dedicated batteries charge slowly, then deliver power to cars at maximum speed. This approach helps prevent grid overloads and maintains high output at each station.

BYD engineers have also introduced a new T-shaped connector, which simplifies plugging in and makes the process more user-friendly. This solution reduces the risk of mistakes and speeds up the charging process—an important factor given high traffic at stations.

European debut and outlook

Flash Charging will soon launch in Europe: the presentation is scheduled for April 8 in Paris, where the new Denza Z9GT—a premium electric car—will be unveiled as the first to feature this technology and upgraded battery. Denza is a BYD brand created to compete in the luxury segment. The European specs are expected to be announced within the next few weeks.

The company has already confirmed plans for a global rollout of the Flash Charging network. This is particularly relevant given recent market changes: new tariffs imposed by the European Commission have already led to higher prices for Chinese electric vehicles in Spain, making technological advantages a key factor in attracting buyers.

The introduction of Flash Charging could be a decisive factor for those who are hesitant to switch to electric vehicles. Fast charging, extended range, and a well-developed infrastructure have the potential to shift the market balance and accelerate the move away from traditional engines.

BYD is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of electric vehicles and batteries, actively advancing its own technologies and infrastructure. The company is renowned for innovative solutions in energy storage and charging, as well as a broad lineup ranging from mass-market to premium cars. Thanks to major investments in research and development, BYD regularly brings products to market that redefine what electric transport can offer.
