On Spain’s roads, vehicles equipped with tow bars are becoming increasingly common. This component, also known as a towing device, is designed for towing trailers or transporting additional loads. It typically consists of a metal ball about 50 mm in diameter, mounted on the rear of the vehicle, serving as the connection point to the trailer.
The cost of installing a tow bar depends on several factors. The price of the part itself ranges from 100 to 500 euros, depending on the type: fixed, detachable, or retractable. In addition, there is a fee for professional installation, which can range from 150 to 500 euros. The final cost depends on the complexity of the installation and the region—services are more expensive in large cities such as Madrid or Barcelona. After installation, a technical inspection is required, costing 30-60 euros. As a result, total expenses for passenger cars typically range between 300 and 700 euros, while for more complex vehicles, costs can reach up to 1,000 euros.
The installation process begins with selecting a suitable tow bar that must meet European standards and be compatible with the specific car model. Before starting the work, it is recommended to disconnect the battery and, if necessary, remove the rear bumper to access the mounting points. The main structure is then mounted and secured to the chassis using bolts and accessories. After that, the tow ball itself is installed and must be firmly fixed.
The next step is connecting the wiring to the rear lights or a dedicated control unit to ensure the operation of light signals when towing a trailer. The electrical socket is positioned near the tow bar for convenient access. Once all work is completed, the bumper is reinstalled if it was removed, and the functionality of all systems is checked. The final step is visiting the nearest technical inspection station to confirm the correct installation and obtain a permit for use.
According to the requirements of the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), a number of conditions must be met for the legal use of a tow bar. Only certified materials are used, installation must be carried out at licensed service centers, and the owner is required to have all necessary documentation: certificates, reports, and proof of compliance. After installation, a technical inspection is mandatory, and both the license plate and lights must remain visible.
Violation of these rules can lead to serious financial consequences. Driving a vehicle with an uncertified towbar is punishable by a €200 fine, and in some cases the amount may increase to €400–500. If the towbar or trailer covers the license plate, this will add another €200 to the fine. In particularly severe cases, where the installation is done with gross violations, the vehicle may be impounded until the issues are resolved.
