RTVE launches largest-ever broadcast for Papal visit. RTVE is preparing a large-scale broadcast of Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Spain. For the first time, more than 660 specialists and 170 cameras will be involved. Live coverage and special programs will span Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands.

RTVE has announced the largest media deployment in its history: more than 660 employees will provide live coverage of Pope Leo XIV’s first official visit to Spain from June 6 to 12. The focus will be on Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands, where the pontiff will attend key events. RTVE will use 17 mobile broadcast units, five studios, a helicopter, motorcycles, drones, and 170 cameras, enabling live reports from the main venues and city streets.

The entire week will be filled with special broadcasts on La 1, Canal 24 horas, RTVE Play, and on social media. The programs will be hosted by the corporation’s leading journalists: Lourdes Maldonado, Marc Sala, Pepa Bueno, Alejandra Herranz, Cristina Villanueva, Gemma Nierga, among others. Special attention will be paid to three regions: in Madrid, the largest mass is expected on Plaza de Cibeles; in Barcelona, the consecration of the Sagrada Família; and in the Canary Islands, meetings with migrants and a mass at the Gran Canaria stadium.

RTVE emphasizes that coordination between the centers in Madrid, Catalonia, and the Canary Islands has become one of the most challenging tasks in recent years. The corporation’s management notes that preparations for the Pope's visit, in both scale and complexity, are comparable to a mini-Olympics: hundreds of specialists, kilometers of cables, and dozens of mobile units are involved. The broadcasts will feature not only live coverage, but also analysis, interviews, street reports, and details about security measures.

The schedule includes daily special broadcasts: from the Pope’s arrival at Madrid airport to meetings with officials, youth, cultural representatives, and migrants. In Barcelona, the key event will be a mass and the consecration of the new tower of the Sagrada Familia, dedicated to the centenary of Gaudí’s death. In the Canary Islands, the focus is on humanitarian topics and work with migrants. The entire program is supported by RTVE’s regional teams and includes special editions on Radio Nacional, Radio 5, and Radio Exterior de España.

An important part of the preparations was working with the international signal: RTVE is responsible for producing the official broadcast for foreign channels. According to the management, this demands the utmost precision and professionalism so that Spain is presented to a global audience live. In addition to the main programs, other RTVE shows are covering the events of the visit, and reporters are on the streets to capture the atmosphere and residents’ reactions.

Ahead of the visit, RTVE Play released the special report “Un Papa contra la indiferencia,” dedicated to the places that will receive the Pope’s special attention: the Cáritas center in Madrid, the Sant Agustí Nou church in Barcelona, and the port of Arguineguín in the Canaries. There is also a special edition focused on the significance of the Sagrada Familia’s consecration. For radio listeners, live broadcasts are being prepared from key locations, including parliament, stadiums, and churches.

The large-scale visit of Pope Leo XIV has already affected city life: road restrictions have been introduced in Madrid and Barcelona, as previously reported in the article about transport changes during the visit. Authorities and security services are working in heightened mode to ensure order and safety at every stage of the pontiff's route.

For reference: RTVE is Spain's largest state-owned media corporation, encompassing television, radio, and digital platforms. The Pope's visit is an international event that traditionally draws increased attention from both the media and the country's residents. In 2026, RTVE is focusing on technological solutions and multiplatform coverage to ensure maximum reach and broadcast quality.
