Mercadona opens largest supermarket in Cabo de Palos: 4,500 m² and 300 parking spaces. One of the largest Mercadona stores in Spain has opened in Cabo de Palos. Investments exceeded 5 million euros. The new location is designed for high summer demand and year-round operation.
A new Mercadona supermarket—one of the largest in the country—opened on June 1 in Cabo de Palos (Cartagena). The 4,500-square-meter store is built on a 13,277 m² plot and offers 300 parking spaces. Investments in the project exceeded 5 million euros. The new facility is located in a tourist area and has replaced the previous store of the chain, which was situated nearby.
According to Cartagena’s city council, the opening of such a large commercial center not only strengthens the area's retail offering, but also ensures the preservation of jobs and the creation of new ones. Authorities emphasize that this is not a temporary boost for the season, but a long-term infrastructure able to sustain economic activity and employment throughout the year.
Mercadona has confirmed that the entire permanent team from the previous store—about 50 employees—will continue working in the new premises. This allows the company to retain an experienced team and avoid layoffs as retail space expands.
The new supermarket includes a spacious shopping gallery on the ground floor (4,168 m²), storage and technical areas, as well as an additional floor of 337 m². The underground parking accommodates 235 cars, including 8 spaces for people with reduced mobility. The open-air lot provides 90 more spaces, 3 of which are designated for visitors with limited mobility.
The opening of a new Mercadona facility reflects the trend of consolidation among retail chains in Spain. Previously, other major market players have taken similar steps: for example, the Consum chain increased its turnover over the past year and opened dozens of new stores, strengthening its position and paying record bonuses to employees. More details on the competitors’ growth dynamics can be found in the article about Consum's growth and staff payments.
For reference: Mercadona is the largest grocery chain in Spain, founded in Valencia and operating in more than 1,600 locations nationwide. The company actively invests in store modernization and assortment expansion, placing particular emphasis on logistics and customer convenience. In recent years, the chain has focused on energy-efficient technologies and improving conditions for employees, allowing it to maintain a leading position in the market.
