Cardeña Became the Coolest Town in Córdoba This Summer. While Córdoba continues to set new temperature records, the municipality of Cardeña is enjoying a noticeably milder summer. Its elevation and natural surroundings provide coolness here even at the height of the season.

Another summer season in Córdoba comes with new temperature records, especially in cities like Montoro and La Rambla. According to Aemet, the region is experiencing increasingly prolonged and intense heat, while average temperatures have risen noticeably in recent years. However, even in one of Spain’s hottest provinces, there are still places where summer feels different.

The municipality of Cardeña, situated at about 700 meters above sea level and surrounded by the Parque Natural de Cardeña-Montoro, stands out from the rest of Córdoba. Here, maximum temperatures during the peak of heat are several degrees lower than in the provincial capital, and the nights remain cool. Thanks to its elevation and extensive forests, the nighttime temperature allows residents and visitors to rest without the usual stifling heat typical for Córdoba.

Unlike in the Guadalquivir valley cities, where the thermometer reliably approaches 40 degrees, in Cardeña, summer nights are rarely tropical. The difference is especially noticeable at dawn, when the mountain air becomes distinctly fresher. Locals call this area one of Córdoba’s “natural air conditioners.”

The summer season in Cardeña stands out not just for its temperatures. The municipality is home to Mediterranean forests and vast pastures, as well as one of the largest populations of Iberian deer in Andalusia. During the warm months, walks along shaded trails, wildlife watching, and nighttime excursions for astronomy enthusiasts are popular—the low level of light pollution allows for especially clear views of the stars.

The contrast between Cardeña and Córdoba is especially evident according to official Aemet data for 2024. In June, the average temperature in the municipality was 21.8º, with a maximum of 28.1º and a minimum of 15.6º. In July, the average temperature rose to 27.8º, with a maximum of 35.4º and a minimum of 19.6º. In August, average figures reached 28.3º, with a maximum temperature of 36º and a minimum of 20.4º. For comparison, in Córdoba itself, the average summer highs consistently exceed 35º and on some days reach up to 45º.

Cardeña is among the few municipalities in Córdoba where geography and natural conditions allow for a milder climate even amid increasing heat. This makes the city attractive to those seeking relief from the region's extreme temperatures. According to RUSSPAIN, such climatic differences within a single province are explained not only by altitude but also by the density of forests and features of the terrain. In Andalusia, these areas are becoming increasingly popular for domestic tourism during the summer.
