A dana and humid Mediterranean winds are expected to bring intense rain from Saturday, with the Balearic Islands and Mediterranean coast at greatest risk. Catalonia has activated its Inuncat alert, where rainfall could reach 20 litres per square metre in 30 minutes.

Protección Civil has activated Catalonia’s Inuncat alert after Meteocat warned that parts of the coast and prelitoral could see 20 litres of rain in 30 minutes on Saturday. The warning covers the afternoon and evening. Meteocat’s municipal forecast for Castellfollit de Riubregós on Saturday, 17 October, puts temperatures at about 13 to 21 degrees, with hourly precipitation readings reaching 0.6 mm.

The unseasonable warmth of recent days is giving way to a colder, wetter spell. Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo expects intense rain from Saturday afternoon through Monday, particularly around the Balearic Islands and along the Mediterranean coast. Local rainfall totals could be significant, but Aemet says uncertainty remains high over which areas will be worst affected.

Aemet’s national forecast, updated on 13 October, includes a table of active hazardous-weather warnings and maximum and minimum temperatures for the next two days.

Rain could turn persistent on Sunday as a dana approaches from northern Europe and humid Levante winds blow in from the Mediterranean. Showers are expected across broad areas of Spain, with the heaviest conditions possible on Mediterranean coasts and in the Balearic Islands.

Temperatures will take a sharp dive. A passing front and colder air are expected to bring falls of 8 to 10 degrees in northern and central Spain on Saturday compared with the previous day. Highs will stay below 20 degrees across much of the north, though parts of Andalucía could still reach 30.

Sunday is forecast to feel cold for the time of year, especially in the north and east of the peninsula, where temperatures could sit 5 to 10 degrees below the seasonal average. Protección Civil and Emergencias are urging people to take extra care around intense rain and sudden storms, and to keep checking forecasts and situation updates. Aemet’s station network provides hourly observations and daily temperature extremes. It also records accumulated rainfall.

RUSSPAIN has also covered the royal visit to Ceuta, a separate report from this weekend’s weather alert.

For the Catalan warning area, Meteocat lists a maximum danger level of 3 out of 6. The forecast allows for 60 litres per square metre in three hours.
