The collision involved Iryo 6079, carrying 146 passengers and a baby, and Renfe AVE 2080, with 396 people on board. It occurred at about 08:54 on 28 October near Urda, between Mora and Orgaz, at kilometre point 118 on the Madrid to Andalusia high-speed line. Both trains were travelling toward Seville.
At least 32 people have died, information from the Delegación del Gobierno de Castilla-La Mancha. Europa Press reported an earlier regional-government toll of at least 30. The number of injured people has not been specified.
Two carriages fell down an embankment, and the last two Iryo carriages derailed. Early operational reports described the collision as a rear-end impact, with the Renfe train striking the Iryo service. The crash halted high-speed rail traffic between Madrid and Ciudad Real, as well as services to Andalusia, in both directions.
Castilla-La Mancha activated its regional emergency plan, PLATECAM, at 09:15 in Operational Situation 1. At 10:30, after requesting support from the Military Emergency Unit (UME), the regional government raised the plan to Operational Situation 2. Adif suspended traffic on the route.
Renfe activated its assistance plan for victims and relatives, sending staff to the site alongside Adif personnel. Renfe provided the dedicated telephone number 900 10 10 20 for victims and relatives; Iryo provided 655 28 69 75.
The cause of the collision is unknown. Initial reports described a rear-end impact, while press accounts also cited possible signaling or communications problems as preliminary explanations.
