A high-profile incident occurred in central Granada on Saturday night: six young men attacked a local resident over the inscription on his T-shirt. The victim, Pablo Rodríguez, co-owner of the Loop bar and a cook at the Gómez Moreno school, suffered a severe facial injury and was hospitalized. According to Spanish media, the attack took place after a group of young men noticed his T-shirt with the slogan “Antifascist bitches.”
The incident happened around three in the morning when Rodríguez was returning home after work. According to his girlfriend Alejandra Chenol, the young men, aged between 25 and 30 and dressed in black, first expressed displeasure over the inscription on the T-shirt, and then one of them delivered a heavy blow to the victim's face. Rodríguez lost consciousness and fell to the ground. His girlfriend and a friend, who were nearby, rushed to him and called an ambulance.
The victim's condition
The victim was taken to Virgen de las Nieves hospital and admitted to the neurosurgery department. Doctors diagnosed a fractured cheekbone, severe bleeding, and loss of consciousness. Rodríguez is still in the hospital and awaiting surgery. According to Chenol, he will only be able to consume liquid food for the next month. In the first hours after the attack, the man was unable to speak coherently and did not remember what had happened.
Reaction and investigation
The Granada police have launched an investigation into the attack. Rodriguez has not yet been able to file an official statement due to his health condition, but police officers have already visited him in the hospital. According to preliminary reports, the attackers fled immediately after the incident. Witnesses said that a group of young people quickly left the scene, fearing consequences.
The victim’s girlfriend believes that the attack was solely related to the message on the t-shirt and qualifies as a hate crime. She also noted that neither Rodriguez nor the attackers were under the influence of alcohol. The morning after the incident, graffiti with Nazi symbols appeared in the neighborhood.
Public Reaction
On Monday, after classes ended at Gómez Moreno school, a protest was held. Between 200 and 300 people attended—colleagues, parents, and local residents. Participants wore t-shirts and carried banners with the same slogan that had prompted the attack. They showed support for the victim and spoke out against violence and hate-mongering.
