Barcelona's Sants station will undergo a major expansion, nearly tripling its space for high-speed trains and doubling for Rodalies. The project aims to handle almost 75 million travelers by 2030, reshaping the city's main rail hub.
Barcelona's Sants station is set for a dramatic transformation, with construction plans that will nearly triple the space dedicated to high-speed rail and double the area for Rodalies commuter services. The overhaul, driven by a projected surge to almost 75 million annual passengers by 2030, will see the station expand into the adjacent plaza de los Països Catalans. This first phase, backed by an investment exceeding 150 million euros, also includes a full restoration of the plaza and a reorganization of the surrounding area, according to information from Adif.
The most significant growth will be in the high-speed rail section, which will increase its available space by 175%. The passenger hall for high-speed services will jump from 3,700 to 10,220 square meters. Rodalies will also see an 85% expansion, reaching 4,400 square meters. Additional improvements include a 40% increase in customer service areas and a 15% enlargement of the general concourse.
Access to the station will be reconfigured during the works. The mountain-side entrance will close in the third quarter of 2026 and is expected to reopen by the end of that year. The plaza de los Països Catalans will also be temporarily closed, while a new entrance on the sea side is scheduled to open in September. The redesign introduces four levels: a main concourse with access and boarding areas, a first level with an additional boarding hall, a second level featuring a VIP zone for high-speed travelers, and a third level for Adif offices and technical rooms.
Adif is currently contracting the drafting of a phased plan to complete the station's transformation, aiming for an efficient and economically rational sequence of works. Planned upgrades include moving the taxi rank underground, building a new parking facility on the mountain side, and creating a new entrance to the Barcelona Metro. The ultimate goal is to establish a multimodal mobility hub capable of meeting the rising demand.
