Applications have opened for the Basque Country’s expanded child benefit, offering €200 per month for every child under the age of four. The new measure, which took effect on July 2, 2026, is retroactive to January 1, meaning eligible families can claim payments dating back to the start of the year.
This extension marks a significant shift in family policy. Previously, the €200 monthly support ended when a child turned three. Now, under the latest decree published in the Boletín Oficial del País Vasco, families can receive the benefit until their child’s fourth birthday. Eligibility and Application
To qualify, applicants must be residents and officially registered in Euskadi, living at the same address as the child. The rules require at least one year of residency or, alternatively, five years of registration within the past decade. Families must also maintain custody and cohabitation with the child throughout the period for which they claim the benefit.
The Basque Government has clarified that families who previously exhausted the benefit at age three, or who never applied, must submit a new application to access the extended support. Retroactive Payments and Funding
The retroactive provision means families who meet the criteria can receive back payments from January 2026. The Basque Government has allocated €85.8 million over the next four years to fund the expanded program, with €33.8 million earmarked for 2026 alone.
