A prisoner died in a cell at Brians 2 without the prison’s suicide prevention protocol being active. The report said the death brought the annual toll in Catalan prisons to eight, two more than the previous year.

On 24 October 2026, a prisoner died in a cell in an ordinary housing module at Brians 2, in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Barcelona. His cellmate found him without signs of life and alerted prison officers. Emergency services attended and certified the death.

The prisoner was not enrolled in Catalonia’s Programa de Prevenció de Suïcidis (PPS), a programme run by the Justice and Health departments to prevent suicides and monitor prisoners considered at risk. The Department of Justice of the Generalitat said it had reported the death to the competent judicial authorities and activated the procedures that apply to a prison death. The PPS had not been active for the prisoner before his death.

The report described the death as the eighth suicide in Catalan prisons in 2026, two more than the total recorded among prisoners in the previous year. It also cited research identifying imprisonment itself as a vulnerability factor associated with suicidal behaviour. Information from the cited studies, the risk among prisoners is 6% to 7% higher than in the general population.

The Generalitat declined to provide further details, saying it wanted to respect the deceased and his family while preserving the investigation. The department offered condolences to the family and said it would support them.

In separate coverage of a television family dispute, RUSSPAIN.COM reported on Andrea and Jesulín.
