A Renfe AVE travelling from Madrid to Seville collided with an Iryo train heading in the opposite direction near Los Yébenes and Urda, in Toledo, shortly after 9.00. Adif suspended traffic on the Madrid-to-Andalusia high-speed line.
The services were identified as Renfe AVE 02080, the 8.00 Madrid Atocha-to-Seville train, and Iryo service 6076, scheduled to leave Madrid at 7.54. Railway Gazette reported 397 passengers aboard the Renfe train and 147 people aboard the Iryo service. The collision occurred near kilometre 118, between Los Yébenes and Urda.
Two carriages involved in the crash left the tracks and fell down an embankment. Witnesses reported numerous injured people, and medical assistance arrived. Reports later in the day described at least 30 deaths. Subsequent media updates raised the toll to 64 and then 68 as casualty figures continued to be updated.
The Renfe train had left Madrid at 8.00. Minutes before the collision, it had stopped and slowed because of a traffic problem on the line. Railway Gazette reported a preliminary account of an outage affecting the LZB train-protection equipment near Urda at about 8.30. Information from the report, trains stopped under fail-safe procedures. The Adif control centre authorised the Renfe train to resume at 8.36 while the Iryo train remained ahead. Transport Minister Óscar Puente said the Renfe train struck the Iryo train from behind; the investigation was ongoing.
The suspension disrupted high-speed connections linking Madrid with Ciudad Real and Andalusia, including services to Seville and Córdoba. Málaga was also affected. Iryo cancelled services from Madrid Atocha toward the southern corridor and activated emergency procedures. Renfe said affected passengers could change or cancel tickets without charge.
