The Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín is a finalist in the 2026 BSH awards for its hernia procedure. The assessment considers efficiency and care quality alongside patient experience.
The General Surgery service at Hospital Doctor Negrín performs around 400 hernia operations a year. The hospital has been named a finalist in the hernia procedure category of the VIII edition of the BSH-Best Spanish Hospitals Awards. The awards, granted by Higia Benchmarking, assess public and private hospitals across Spain in areas including medical, surgical and maternal-infant care, as well as emergencies, intensive care, costs and value-based healthcare.
Surgeon Raúl Medina collected the finalist diploma at an event in Madrid. The hospital is attached to the Consejería de Sanidad del Gobierno de Canarias. In the same 2026 awards cycle, Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda received two awards and three finalist diplomas, covering surgical processes, hospital costs, medical processes, intensive care and hospital emergencies, according to the Comunidad de Madrid.
The awards assess hospitals using indicators covering efficiency and appropriateness, as well as care quality and patient experience. Measures used in comparisons of relevant diseases and procedures include mortality, complications, readmissions and length of stay. The awards compare hospitals with similar characteristics and recognize performance in specific areas rather than ranking every hospital in Spain overall. Their stated aim is to encourage clinical management focused on continuous improvement across hospitals in Spain.
A total of 65 public and private hospitals from nine autonomous communities took part in this edition. For each main award area, three hospitals are selected as candidates using objective indicators adjusted for case mix. The highest-scoring hospital in each group receives the BSH statuette; the other two are named finalists.
The assessment covered up to 110 integrated clinical processes across 11 clinical areas. Together, these represented more than 91% of the hospital caseload analysed, with over 5,000 indicators reviewed for each hospital. Hernias occur when tissue or an organ protrudes through a weakened area of muscle or connective tissue. Quirónsalud describes laparoscopic and open surgery as approaches selected according to the individual case. The clinical focus here is distinct from the research-policy subject of an earlier report on doctoral training.
