Garbage Collectors' Strike in Girona Cancelled After Agreement Approved. Garbage collection workers in Girona have approved a preliminary agreement with their employer. The strike, which threatened to disrupt the Temps de Flors festival, has been called off. Authorities highlight the importance of the compromise reached.
In Girona, the strike by garbage collection employees, which threatened to disrupt one of the city's main events—the Temps de Flors exhibition—has been called off. The decision was made after the workers of Girona+Neta voted by majority to support a preliminary agreement reached between the unions and the employer.
At the meeting held on Wednesday, 169 out of 212 employees participated. As a result of the vote, 138 people supported the agreement, 30 voted against, and one ballot was left blank. According to union representatives, this outcome demonstrates a high level of engagement and responsibility from the team throughout all stages of the negotiations.
Threat to the city festival
The previously announced strike threatened the Temps de Flors—the annual flower exhibition that draws thousands of tourists to Girona and is considered one of the city's key events for its economy and image. City authorities were actively involved in negotiations to prevent the disruption of the event.
Girona Mayor Lluc Salellas expressed his satisfaction that the parties managed to reach an agreement within the company providing garbage collection services. He noted that the agreement not only resolves the labor dispute but also opens up opportunities to further improve service quality, which, in his view, still does not meet the desired level.
Voting details and the positions of the parties
According to the union committee, high voter turnout and a significant majority in favor of the agreement were key factors in the cancellation of the protest actions. Worker representatives emphasized that the team demonstrated solidarity and a willingness to compromise for the sake of stability and the interests of the city.
The authorities of Girona, in turn, highlighted the importance of the compromise reached and expressed hope that similar situations in the future will be resolved more quickly and without threatening city events. The intervention of the municipality played a significant role in speeding up the negotiation process.
Context and significance of the decision
The company Girona+Neta is responsible for waste collection in Girona and employs more than two hundred staff. The strike could have caused serious inconvenience for residents and visitors, especially during major events. Now, after the protests have been called off, the city is preparing to host Temps de Flors without additional risks to cleanliness and order on the streets.
