According to the Servei Català de Trànsit, the collision took place just after 3 p.m. at kilometer four of the BV-2005, a local road in Torrelles de Llobregat, near Barcelona. Two passenger cars collided head-on. The cause is still under investigation. A female passenger in one of the vehicles died at the scene. Another person was seriously injured, and three others had minor injuries.
By the end of the Diada holiday exodus, more than 541,000 vehicles had left the Barcelona metropolitan area, according to Catalan traffic authorities.
Emergency services responded quickly. Five Mossos d'Esquadra patrols, three fire brigade units, and several teams from the Sistema de Emergencias Médicas (SEM) were sent to the scene. They worked to rescue the injured, secure the area, and manage the aftermath. This incident follows several other fatal accidents on Catalan roads since the start of the Diada holiday. On Thursday night, a 27-year-old woman died in a crash on the N-340 in Altafulla, Tarragona. The next day, two motorcyclists died in separate accidents: one on the N-260 in Ribera d’Urgellet (Alt Urgell), and another on the C-59 in Caldes de Montbui (Vallès Oriental). So far this year, 94 people have died on Catalan roads.
Holiday periods in Spain, especially around major celebrations like the Diada, often see more traffic and a rise in accidents.
