In Barcelona and its suburbs, the age requirement for obtaining the Tarjeta Rosa depends on your place of residence and can vary by up to five years. The card offers significant discounts on public transport, but eligibility is determined not only by age, but also by household income.
The eligibility for a discounted Tarjeta Rosa transport card in Barcelona and neighboring cities depends directly on age and place of registration. In some municipalities, the card can be obtained from the age of 60, while in others — only from 65. For many residents, this is more than a formality: a five-year difference means substantial savings on daily travel.
Tarjeta Rosa is a social travel pass valid throughout the Barcelona metropolitan area. It is intended for elderly people, citizens with a disability of 33% or more and their companions, as well as those whose income does not exceed a certain threshold. There are two types of cards: free and partially paid. A free card is issued to those whose annual income per person does not exceed 9,240 euros, and to obtain a partially paid card (the so-called Tarjeta Rosa reducida), the limit is increased to 18,480 euros per year.
Holders of the Tarjeta Rosa reducida purchase a special T-4 ticket for 10 trips at 2.25 euros. It can be bought at tobacco kiosks, metro ticket machines, and via the TMB and AMB Mobilitat apps. Up to two of these tickets can be loaded in one purchase, for a total of 20 journeys. Each ticket allows up to three transfers within 75 minutes from validation. The card is valid on the metro, urban and intercity buses, trams, and Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat trains, but does not cover Rodalies.
Age differences
The key factor is the minimum age for applying. In Barcelona, Badalona, L’Hospitalet, Cornellà, Castelldefels, El Prat, Sant Adrià, Sant Vicenç dels Horts, and Santa Coloma de Gramenet, the card is available from age 60. In Viladecans, it's from 61; in Esplugues, Montgat, Sant Boi, Sant Joan Despí, Sant Just Desvern, and Tiana — from 62; in Gavà — from 63. In the other 19 municipalities, the minimum age is 65. Thus, your place of residence determines when exactly you can start using the benefits.
A separate rule applies for companions of people with disabilities: they can obtain a special pass regardless of their income level.
What will change in the future
Starting in 2027, the benefit system will expand beyond the Barcelona metropolitan area. Several cities in the second transport zone will introduce a new T-Social card, supervised by AMTU. It is expected that about 70,000 people in cities such as Sabadell, Terrassa, Granollers, Mollet, Rubí, Sant Quirze del Vallès, La Roca del Vallès, Les Franqueses del Vallès, Igualada, Vilafranca del Penedès, Sitges, and Vic will be able to take advantage of this offer. Each municipality will set its own requirements and minimum age for obtaining the card.
