On Monday evening, a serious incident occurred in the small Andalusian town of Sayalonga (Malaga): a gas cylinder exploded in the storage area of the Mesón Morisco restaurant. The explosion caused the complete collapse of the building's upper floor, and eight people, including two children aged two and seven, sustained minor injuries. All the victims were in the restaurant watching the Spanish national football team's match.
According to 112 Andalucía emergency services, the call came in around 8:15 p.m. Witnesses reported a powerful explosion and injuries. Emergency teams, including medics and firefighters from Vélez-Málaga, arrived at the scene. Medical workers treated all the injured on-site; no one required hospitalization. Among the adults injured are people aged between 33 and 88 years.
The explosion affected not only the restaurant but also a residential area on the upper floor, where an elderly woman lived. She was evacuated without complications, and later firefighters helped her collect her essential belongings. The blast wave damaged the facades of neighboring buildings and shattered numerous windows. Firefighters inspected the debris to ensure no one was trapped and removed the remaining gas cylinders from the building.
Rafael Alcoba Square, where the restaurant is located, was completely cordoned off to assess the building's condition and prevent unauthorized access. The Civil Guard is investigating the causes of the explosion. The management of Mesón Morisco has announced a temporary closure until inspections are complete and the aftermath has been addressed.
