Severe thunderstorms and unstable weather expected in Spain from May 17 to 20. Spain is facing a period of severe thunderstorms and unstable weather from May 17 to 20. Heavy showers are expected in the northern and eastern regions, as well as in the Canary Islands. The main concern is a sharp increase in rainfall and strong winds.

In the coming days, Spain is set for a sharp deterioration in weather conditions: from May 17 to 20, the country will experience severe storms and instability affecting several regions at once. This forecast was made by popular social media meteorologist Jorge Rey, who uses the “cabañuelas” method for long-term predictions. According to him, the greatest risk of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms will be in the interior of the northern part of the country, the Central System, the Ebro Valley, and the inland Mediterranean belt.

Storm front and its consequences

According to Jorge Rey's calculations, during this period Atlantic cyclones will enter Spain, bringing fresh winds and significant humidity. This will lead to a noticeable drop in atmospheric stability and the formation of powerful storm centers. Particularly intense downpours are expected in Galicia, Asturias, the Central Plateau, and certain Mediterranean areas. On the weekend, rain may also spread to western regions and affect the Canary Islands.

Monthly dynamics and key periods

According to the forecast, instability will begin to increase from May 9 to 16, when frequent but less intense thunderstorms will occur across the country. The main peak of precipitation and storm activity is expected from May 17 to 20, after which, toward the end of the month, from May 25 to 28, a second, though more localized, surge in thunderstorm activity is forecast. For the rest of the month, the weather will be changeable, with daytime storms prevailing and brief but intense showers.

Method features and public trust

The 'cabañuelas' method, which Jorge Rey relies on, is based on observing weather changes in the first days of January or August to make long-term forecasts. Although this approach is not recognized by official science, the number of its supporters in Spain continues to grow. Jorge Rey has become a prominent figure online, and his forecasts are regularly discussed in the media and on social networks.

Attention to Spain’s unstable weather is intensifying against the backdrop of other high-profile events recently discussed in the country. For example, internal conflicts within well-known football clubs have also become a subject of public interest, as was the case in the heated dispute between Real Madrid players.

According to experts, May will not be a month of continuous rain, but it will bring a series of localized, sometimes very intense thunderstorms that may affect the daily lives of residents and the plans of tourists. Authorities and services are warning of the need to follow forecast updates, especially during periods of sudden weather deterioration.

For reference: According to the Real Academia Española, 'cabañuelas' is a popular method of long-term weather forecasting based on observations of atmospheric changes at the beginning of the year. Despite its lack of scientific recognition, this method remains popular in several regions of Spain.
