Madrid NNGG Leader Runs for Head of PP Youth Wing. Ignacio Dancausa has announced his intention to lead Nuevas Generaciones PP. His decision coincided with the congress date announcement and the departure of Beatriz Fanjul. The party faces growing debate over the future direction of its youth organization.
The internal party struggle for the leadership of Nuevas Generaciones Partido Popular has reached a new level after Ignacio Dancausa, head of the PP youth wing in Madrid, officially announced his candidacy for the position of national leader of the organization. His statement came two days after the national leadership of the party set the date for the congress — July 11, which coincides with the end of Beatriz Fanjul's five-year term in this post.
Dancausa, who is 25 years old, is known as one of the most prominent representatives of the so-called "hard" wing of the PP youth structure. Within the organization, he is often called "mini Ayuso" due to his closeness to Madrid President Isabel Díaz Ayuso and their similar political positions. His activity at public events and on social media has repeatedly sparked discussion: some of his posts on X (formerly Twitter) provoked a sharp reaction and were even deleted at the request of the party's central office. In one instance, this concerned a video criticizing parliamentary journalists amid a dispute over accreditations for far-right activists Vito Quiles and Bertrand Ndongo.
Dancausa's announcement of her candidacy coincided with a period when a debate over strategic direction once again intensified within the PP after the loss of the absolute majority in Andalusia. The party is discussing whether to bet on the 'via Moreno'—a more moderate approach—or the 'via Ayuso', which implies tougher rhetoric and confrontation with Vox. If Dancausa wins, the PP's youth organization could shift towards the latter option. According to RUSSPAIN, similar debates about tactics and alliances have recently arisen at the regional level as well, for example, during the formation of new alliances in Galicia.
In March this year, the organization already went through a crisis: at that time, Secretary General Carlo G. Angrisano resigned after publicly supporting Vox. After this, Dancausa's name became one of the main candidates to succeed Fanjul. Inside the PP, it is not ruled out that she could be the only candidate, but the final list of participants will be known closer to the date of the congress. In 2021, the party already tried to avoid a split by forming a unified list with the participation of Angrisano.
PP leadership hopes that the renewed youth organization will not only serve as a personnel reserve, but also as a platform to attract young voters, some of whom in recent years have switched to Vox. According to the latest polls, among young people aged 18 to 24, Santiago Abascal's party is ahead of the PP in popularity. At the same time, Vox also maintains an advantage in age groups up to 44. Against this backdrop, the election of a new NNGG leader takes on strategic importance for the PP.
For reference: Nuevas Generaciones is the largest youth political organization in Spain, traditionally serving as a launching pad for future leaders of the PP. In recent years, its role has grown amid increased competition for the youth electorate and internal debate over the party's direction. The results of the July congress could affect not only personnel policy, but also the PP's strategy ahead of the next general elections.
