La bola negra has won the San Sebastián audience prize and topped Spain's box office. Its opening drew 175,000 viewers and nearly €1.5 million as cinemas struggle to meet demand.

At Cines de Embajadores, 5,000 tickets had sold before the doors opened one day early. The figure shows how quickly La bola negra moved from promotion to attendance.

Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the film reached number one at the box office on its first day. It also won the Premio del Público Ciudad de San Sebastián. That is Spain's strongest opening for a film in a decade.

The numbers are clear. About 175,000 spectators have already seen the film, with takings close to one and a half million euros. Several cinemas have sold all available seats. Demand is hard to miss.

Before its Spanish release, La bola negra also won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, giving the film an early international audience endorsement.

Atresmedia backed the film. It tells an emotional love story shaped by oppression, war and a wounded relationship. Audiences have called it “preciosa” and a “peliculón”. Supporters are also putting it forward as Spain's Oscar candidate.

EFE and its publishing partners reported the San Sebastián prize on 26 September 2026. The award shows that the film's appeal goes beyond ticket sales. It has become one of the season's leading Spanish releases.

The festival response came first. An earlier report described record advance sales and cinemas adding sessions before the premiere. The Spanish release followed festival appearances in Toronto and San Sebastián, where international coverage treated the film as one of the programme's most prominent titles.

Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi have described the project as a “deeply personal” film about the importance of expressing oneself. International coverage has already placed it in the awards conversation, rather than treating it solely as a box-office success.

Raúl, from the communications team at Cines de Embajadores, said the venue recorded the strongest advance sale in its history. The cinema opened one day early, but 5,000 tickets had already gone.

Finding a seat is now difficult in some cinemas. Available sessions are filling quickly. The San Sebastián prize gives the film an audience award, while the box-office figures give it immediate commercial weight.

Screen Daily and RTL Today described the film's strong reaction on the international festival circuit. Spanish audiences saw it after that festival run. The response carried over.

La bola negra is also being received as a film about collective memory and a chapter of Spain's own history. In interviews with Antena 3 and Onda Cero, the directors called it a “deeply Spanish” story built around empathy and an explicit LGTBIQ+ perspective.

Ambrossi also discussed the film's connection with Federico García Lorca. Love, war, emotion and oppression sit at the center of the story. That gives the release more weight than a routine opening-weekend surge.

The directors have said they want audiences to “fill the cinemas”. They describe the film as emotional but life-affirming, with themes of memory, tolerance and collective trauma. The message reached audiences.

La bola negra has won audience recognition in Toronto and San Sebastián. It has also drawn 175,000 viewers and revenue approaching €1.5 million. Those results make it more than a strong Spanish release.

It is Spain's strongest cinema opening in ten years. The film is also a serious Oscar contender built on visible public demand. Its Toronto victory has strengthened its position as a potential awards-season title.
