Light has unveiled the Light Flip, a foldable phone that abandons the touchscreen in favor of physical buttons and a T9 keyboard. With no social media, ads, or endless scrolling, the device aims to help users regain control over their digital habits. Pre-orders are open, with shipping set for April 2027.

On July 21, 2026, Light introduced the Light Flip, a foldable phone that takes a radical step away from the modern smartphone formula. Instead of a touchscreen, the device relies on physical buttons and a classic T9 keyboard, aiming to curb compulsive phone use by eliminating social media, advertising, and infinite scrolling from the experience.

The Light Flip is available for pre-order at $299, with the first units expected to ship in April 2027. The phone retains essential features like 5G connectivity, a rear camera, and basic utilities, but its design intentionally creates friction—making it less likely that a quick check will spiral into hours of screen time.

Physical Design and Features

Measuring 110 by 58 millimeters when closed, the Light Flip features a matte plastic shell with IP54 certification, offering resistance to dust and splashes. It comes in six colors: black, navy blue, red, pink, yellow, and light gray. When opened, users find a 2.8-inch matte OLED display—about 7.1 centimeters across. There is no touch input; navigation is handled via a directional pad, physical buttons, and the T9 keyboard. The phone includes USB-C charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, 5G support, a removable 1,800 mAh battery, and a 50-megapixel rear sensor that produces 12-megapixel photos.

LightOS: Minimalism by Design

Running on LightOS, the device offers a toolbox of focused functions rather than a gateway to endless content. Light has opened a developer program for adding practical tools—such as QR boarding passes or tuners—provided they do not introduce social media, advertising, or infinite feeds. The company positions the Light Flip as an "anti-AI" phone: there are no built-in assistants or features designed to maximize user engagement. However, developers can create specific tools that use external processing, like voice-to-text dictation. Light has stated it will not take commissions from these apps, even if third parties require subscriptions for server costs.

Targeting Digital Fatigue

Light attributes growing interest among younger users to a sense of fatigue with constant notifications, data collection, and algorithmic targeting. The company also highlights privacy concerns around AI, referencing ongoing debates about data security and attention loss. To support users transitioning away from heavy screen time, Light has launched "Flip Your Life," a biweekly publication and newsletter offering ideas for offline activities and a more mindful relationship with technology.

Pricing and Availability

The $299 price applies to the unlocked Light Flip. In the United States, Light also offers a 24-month contract at $39 per month, which includes 1 GB of data and unlimited calls and texts on AT&T and T-Mobile networks. As of now, there is no confirmed euro pricing, Spanish release date, or official details on compatibility with Spanish networks. Prospective buyers in Spain are advised to check these factors before placing a reservation.

The Light Flip stands out as a deliberate alternative to the feature-packed, AI-driven smartphones dominating the market. By stripping away the elements that drive compulsive use, Light is betting that a simpler, more intentional device can help users reclaim their time and attention.
