Mago de Oz has publicly criticized former bandmates for using the group’s name and logo to promote their own concerts. The band warns that the actions could have legal consequences and urges respect among former collaborators.
Concert posters in Spain and Latin America have sparked a dispute over the Mägo de Oz name. The band, led by drummer Txus di Fellatio, says former members are using its name and logo to draw crowds to their own shows. In its latest statement, the band called this “a practice of misleading and illegal advertising.”
The dispute began when Kabrönes and Javier Zeta Domínguez, both projects involving former Mägo de Oz musicians, published posters prominently featuring the band’s name and logo. Kabrönes includes José Andrëa, who sang for Mägo de Oz from 1996 to 2011. It also features guitarists Frank and Carlitos, who played with the band until 2020, and bassist Salva, who was with the group from 1989 to 2002. Javier Zeta Domínguez took over vocals after José Andrëa left and remained until 2023. Both projects are now named in the dispute. Reports say Kabrönes played in Nicaragua in 2024, focusing on classic Mägo de Oz songs. The reporting does not establish that the projects have official rights to use the band’s trademark or logo.
Mägo de Oz made its position clear in its public message. The band mocked the “artistic creativity” of the posters, noting that the former members’ own names appear small while the Mägo de Oz brand takes prominence, like a movie title. “It is easier to jump on a moving train than to build the tracks yourself,” the band said.
The band acknowledged that starting new projects is difficult, but drew a line: “There is a small difference between a loving tribute and a commercial optical illusion.” It said using its name to attract fans is unfair and illegal, and called for “common sense” and “respect for the stages we once shared.” The warning continued: “The only special effect left for you to try may be a nice visit to the courthouse.” Spanish and Latin American media report that Mägo de Oz has so far warned only of possible legal action; there is no sign of a lawsuit or court case.
Fans are divided. Comments on the band’s social media show some arguing that former members such as Zeta and José Andrëa embody the spirit of Mägo de Oz, perhaps more than the current lineup. Others say the band’s identity belongs to everyone who helped build its sound. Paraguayan sources report that Javier Domínguez “Zeta,” who left Mägo de Oz in 2023 for health reasons, started his own project, Z Legacy. He now performs melodic hard rock and classic heavy metal on his own. ABC Color reports that the current Mägo de Oz lineup remains active, with performances confirmed as part of its Latin American tour in 2027, while Zeta is scheduled to play in Asunción in November 2026.
Lineup changes are nothing new for Mägo de Oz, but the dispute puts its commercial interests and legacy at the center of a public disagreement over the band’s name, involving one of Spain’s best-known rock acts.
