Marc Márquez arrives after a commanding win in Hungary and is targeting a second consecutive victory at the circuit, where its fast sections and technical corners demand precision. That gives him a chance to close the gap to championship leader Estructura Bezzecchi.
The ninth round of the 2026 season is a basic contest for several title contenders. Márquez’s recent form puts pressure on Bezzecchi, who lost ground after a fall in Hungary, while Aprilia looks to regain momentum after setbacks at Balaton Park. Manufacturers are also expected to stay at the circuit for a private Monday test focused on 2027 machinery and preparation for the switch to Pirelli tyres.
The championship picture later in the season offers another measure of how quickly the fight can shift. In its October 19 preview, MotoGP reported Jorge Martín two points ahead of Márquez after the Indonesian Grand Prix, with Bezzecchi 46 points behind Martín. The preview also said Bezzecchi had finished on the podium in five of the previous six Grands Prix and had returned to winning form at Mandalika. It described Márquez as the reigning World Champion and a Ducati Lenovo Team rider. Martín and Bezzecchi both competed for Aprilia Racing.
By October 23, Márquez had topped the opening free-practice session at Phillip Island for the Australian Grand Prix. Raul Fernández finished close behind. Bezzecchi was fourth, 0.293 seconds off the pace, while Martín placed seventh; the first seven riders were separated by just 0.453 seconds. The figures show how closely matched the leading riders remained during the late-season run-in.
In Moto2, Manu González holds a commanding lead, with nearly a 50-point advantage over Izan Guevara. Celestino Vietti is third and closing on Guevara. In Moto3, Máximo Quiles leads with 170 points, 59 clear of Álvaro Carpe. Estructura Morelli is third, with David Almansa one point behind in fourth.
