Vilena Authorities Launch Major Citywide Mosquito Control Operation. An intensive mosquito control campaign has been launched in Vilena, targeting rural areas, parks, and storm drains. Authorities are ramping up efforts following a spike in temperatures and rainfall to prevent a surge in insect populations.
Villena has faced a sharp increase in the number of mosquitoes after a series of rains and the onset of hot weather. This week, the municipality launched a large-scale campaign to treat the city and its surroundings to prevent the summer from turning into a season of bites and complaints.
The initiative is coordinated by the Department of Environment, with the work carried out by Lokímica, a pest control specialist company. Treatment is already underway in rural areas, along irrigation canals, in city parks, green areas, and key storm drains—precisely where water often accumulates after rainfall, creating ideal breeding conditions for insects.
Strengthening measures
In May, specialists carry out treatments once a week, but starting in June the frequency will double—to twice in seven days. This schedule was chosen due to the weather conditions: the combination of heat and moisture sharply accelerates the appearance of new generations of mosquitoes. At the same time, pest control in Villena is carried out year-round, but its intensity depends on the season and weather factors.
Technologies and agents
Biological agents are used to destroy larvae, targeting only mosquitoes and not harming other species. In specific spots where clusters of adult insects have already been detected, natural pyrethrins are applied—these quickly reduce the number of insects in recreational and walking areas.
Lokímica deploys special equipment: off-road vehicles with powerful sprayers and long-lasting fog generators, as well as drones for hard-to-reach areas. This allows coverage even of those zones that are inaccessible by conventional means.
The role of residents
The municipality emphasizes: the success of the campaign depends not only on city services, but also on the residents themselves. Authorities ask people to regularly inspect their properties, not to leave containers with water, to keep pools clean, and to change the water in animal drinkers in a timely manner. Even a small puddle or a forgotten bowl can become a breeding ground for larvae.
According to city officials, such measures significantly reduce the risk of mass mosquito breeding and make summer in Villena more comfortable. In recent years, similar campaigns have become standard across many Spanish cities, where climate change is causing more frequent outbreaks of insects after rain and heat.
