Bastigueiro Beach in Galicia Receives Recognition for 39 Years of Blue Flag. Bastigueiro Beach has become the only beach in Galicia where the Blue Flag has been raised without interruption since 1987. The Oleiros municipality was awarded for its efforts in environmental management and safety. Other beaches in the region have also received recognition.
Bastiagueiro Beach in the municipality of Oleiros (Galicia) has become the only beach in northwest Spain to have received the prestigious Blue Flag every year since 1987 without interruption. This achievement was recognized at a special ceremony in Gandía, where the Association for Environmental Education and Consumer Protection (Adeac) presented awards to representatives of the municipality. Among those honored were Deputy Mayor María José Varela and Communications Councillor Pablo Sibeira.
According to the organizers, only seven beaches across the country can boast such consistent recognition: six of them are located in the Valencian Community, while Bastiagueiro is the sole representative from Galicia. Oleiros authorities note that this result was made possible thanks to systematic efforts to preserve the coastline, monitor water quality, and develop infrastructure for visitors. This year, other beaches in the municipality—Santa Cristina, Naval, Mera, and Espiñeiro—as well as Castillo de Santa Cruz and Aula do Mar de Mera, will also receive the Blue Flag for their contribution to environmental education.
Bastiagueiro stands out not only for its clean water and safe swimming conditions, but also for its well-developed infrastructure: nearby are parks, sports grounds, and public spaces. This makes the beach a popular spot for family recreation, sports, and social gatherings throughout the year. According to local authorities, maintaining this high quality standard requires constant attention to environmental and maintenance issues.
In recent years, the quality of beaches and the work of local municipalities has regularly become a topic of public debate. For example, in Valencia, authorities recently launched an investigation after an incident at a sports event where the presence of a stripper caused a public outcry among parents and local residents. More about the reaction of the Bonrepós i Mirambell municipality can be found in the article about the investigation into the scandal at the youth team's event.
For reference: the Blue Flag is an international award given to beaches and ports that meet strict standards for water cleanliness, safety, environmental management, and public information. In Spain, more than 600 beaches receive this distinction annually, but only a few have maintained their status uninterrupted for decades. Galicia traditionally ranks among the regions with the highest number of awarded beaches, highlighting the importance of the work done by local administrations in the fields of ecology and tourism.
