Porsche with 12 AK-74 Rifles Found on AP-7 near Girona. A Mossos d'Esquadra patrol discovered a Porsche Cayenne with AK-74 rifles on the AP-7 highway. The driver fled the scene, while police seized the weapons and launched an investigation. The incident is linked to a rise in crime in the region.

On Wednesday night, on a section of the AP-7 highway near Figueres, Mossos d'Esquadra officers stopped a Porsche Cayenne whose trunk contained 12 AK-74 Kalashnikov assault rifles. Upon noticing the patrol, the driver abandoned the car in a parking lot, switched to another vehicle, and fled the scene. According to the police, the discovered weapons are classified as combat arms and are often used in criminal disputes.

The incident occurred around two o’clock in the morning at the 24th kilometer of the road towards Barcelona. During a search of the cabin, police found documents believed to belong to the fugitive. Two bags containing assault rifles were discovered in the trunk, which, according to preliminary assessment, are AK-74s — one of the most widespread assault rifles in the world due to its reliability.

After the weapons were found, additional patrol units arrived at the scene. The car was towed for forensic examination, and the rifles were transferred to a secure storage at the Figueres police department. In the morning, specialists began verifying the authenticity of the weapons and collecting fingerprints. Police are also establishing the owner of the discovered documents and the ultimate destination for the automatic rifles.

According to Mossos d'Esquadra, recent years have seen a rise in detected cases of firearms in Catalonia, especially in the areas of Barcelona and Girona. The weapons are most often connected to the activities of organized criminal groups, which use them to guard illegal marijuana plantations and in inter-clan conflicts. The growth of criminal activity in border regions is raising concerns among police due to the increase in serious crimes and violent incidents.

The situation on Catalonia's roads remains tense: recently, the region has already seen major incidents related to transport and safety. Earlier this week, heavy rain and hail caused a massive accident on the A-67 highway, where 16 cars collided — details of this incident are available here. Police are urging drivers to be particularly cautious on highways and report any suspicious situations.
