In the midst of the Andalusian election campaign, a tragedy on the coast of Huelva—where two Civil Guard officers were killed during an anti-drug operation—sparked sharp political controversy. At a central rally in La Línea de la Concepción, where the historic border with Gibraltar will soon be lifted, Prime Minister and PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez stated that his team is a 'government of decisions,' emphasizing their achievements over the past eight years.
The event began with a minute of silence in memory of the deceased. Sánchez expressed gratitude to the security forces, noting their contribution to the country's protection. After the tragedy, the Socialists suspended their campaign, and at the funeral in Huelva, the government was represented by senior officials, including the Secretary of State for Security and the head of the Civil Guard.
Accusations and counterattacks
PSOE candidate María Jesús Montero strongly criticized the head of the Andalusian Junta and PP candidate Juan Manuel Moreno, accusing him of trying to exploit the tragedy for political gain. She condemned the dissemination of funeral videos, calling it political opportunism, and demanded explanations regarding corruption scandals linked to drug trafficking and Moreno himself. Montero recalled the mask case that involved over 40 PP members in Almería, as well as the unexplained origin of the wealth of Marbella’s city hall family, whose relatives, according to her, were connected to drug trafficking. She also mentioned the photo of Alberto Núñez Feijóo with well-known Galician drug trafficker Marcial Dorado.
The Gibraltar border and the Canary Islands crisis
Sánchez separately highlighted the achievement of the Gibraltar agreement, noting that the removal of the last “European” fence creates new opportunities for the 15,000 workers who cross the border daily. According to him, the agreement between Spain, the United Kingdom, and the European Commission will ensure free movement and joint development of the region.
During his speech, the Prime Minister also commented on the situation with the cruise ship MV Hondius, which ended up in the Canary Islands. He assured that the authorities are acting transparently and professionally, relying on scientific recommendations and international cooperation to protect passengers. Sánchez added that Spain is once again in the international spotlight and emphasized that the country "always fulfills its obligations."
Political clashes and protests
At the rally, criticism was directed at Madrid President Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who visited Mexico. Sánchez noted that her attempts to deliver historical lessons ended in embarrassment. The event itself was not without incidents: the speech by Montero was interrupted twice by workers from the shipbuilding company Navantia, who complained about "blacklists" in hiring and had recently held a 28-day strike at the San Fernando plant.
Issues of corruption and family ties in Andalusian politics have repeatedly become a subject of public attention. For example, the story of the Moreno Bonilla family had previously sparked debate over the influence of personal circumstances on regional politics.
