Known as «Perico» and «Kike», they spent more than four decades at RTVE. The camera operator and sound technician contributed to Al filo de lo imposible and other landmark programmes.

A documentary about the 1983 K2 expedition attracted more than 14 million viewers when it aired the following year, RTVE recalled in a Conexión Vintage special. The broadcaster has announced the deaths of Pedro Fernández Vara and Enrique Bravo Guerrero, two colleagues whose work helped bring such productions to television audiences.

Fernández Vara, known as «Perico», worked as a camera operator; Bravo Guerrero, known as «Kike», was a sound technician. RTVE announced their deaths on Wednesday through its social media accounts, saying: «La familia de RTVE está de luto».

The corporation said both men spent more than 40 years at RTVE. They worked on Al filo de lo imposible and Imprescindibles, as well as Ciudades Patrimonio de la Humanidad and Agrosfera. In its tribute, RTVE called them «Dos grandes profesionales que trabajaron durante más de 40 años en esta casa en los mejores programas y documentales».

Al filo de lo imposible was among the best-known productions of their careers. For more than three decades, the adventure and expedition programme took viewers to remote parts of the world. Sebastián Álvaro directed it for much of its run, and some expeditions, including those to K2, became major television events.

Their work also extended to documentary programming. Imprescindibles, shown on La 2, focuses on the lives and work of major figures in Spanish culture. Ciudades Patrimonio de la Humanidad explored Spain’s historic heritage, while Agrosfera covered rural life and the agricultural sector.

Over more than four decades, television production underwent major technological changes. RTVE’s tribute recognised the professional and personal legacy of the two colleagues, describing them as «Dos grandes compañeros que dejan un gran legado» and sending «Un abrazo fuerte a sus seres queridos».

Their deaths come in the year Televisión Española marks its 70th anniversary. Regular TVE broadcasts began on 28 October 1956, and RTVE has marked the anniversary with programmes examining the broadcaster’s history and place in Spanish society. On 19 October 2026, La 1 aired «El Telediario de nuestras vidas», a roughly 45-minute retrospective bringing together presenters including Iñaki Gabilondo, Matías Prats, Pedro Piqueras, Ana Blanco and Pepa Bueno. RTVE’s message of condolence was addressed to the families of Fernández Vara and Bravo Guerrero.
