Olga Pané says seven people are seriously injured after a bus crash on the BV-5114 in Fogars de Montclús. She has not ruled out the possibility that a fatality remains unlocated.
The accident control centre was set up at La Font de Cal Guardià in Fogars de Montclús. At a briefing there with Santi Lleonart, chief inspector of the Bombers de la Generalitat intervention, Catalonia’s Health Councillor Olga Pané raised the number of seriously injured to seven. Later emergency-service figures put the total number of people affected at 83. Seven were seriously injured, while 18 had moderate injuries; 58 had light injuries.
The Sagalés bus, carrying about 80 passengers on the route between the Fogars de Montclús Information Centre and Santa Fe del Montseny, crashed on the BV-5114 on Sunday afternoon, 25 October. It collided with a passenger car at kilometre 18.4 in Fogars de Montclús before plunging about 20 metres down an embankment in the Montseny Natural Park. Initial emergency-service information said 41 people had been assessed, with at least 20 seriously injured. The figures were revised as triage continued.
Emergency services sent 15 ambulances to the scene. Two medically equipped helicopters also went, along with three combined medical-firefighter teams. Bombers stabilized the bus and evacuated passengers. Some people got out and climbed back up the embankment, while others were trapped. Protecció Civil activated the Procicat emergency plan at the alert stage. Bombers deployed 20 units, including two aerial units.
Pané said a fatality that has not been located could not be ruled out. Search teams continued working in the difficult, wooded terrain, using drones and dogs. Mossos d’Esquadra opened an investigation into the collision. Its cause had not been established.
