Spain’s official electric vehicle charging network dropped by over 4,000 points after a major audit removed obsolete and non-compliant stations. The move marks a shift from chasing big numbers to building a network drivers can actually use.

Spain’s electric vehicle charging map just lost thousands of points overnight—not because of neglect, but by design. The official count now stands at 52,746 public charging stations, down from the 57,000 previously reported. This drop isn’t a setback. It’s a deliberate effort to clear out dead entries and show what’s really available to drivers.

The clean-up, led by AEDIVE (Asociación Empresarial para el Desarrollo e Impulso de la Movilidad Eléctrica), targeted stations that were outdated, duplicated, or simply inactive. Many failed to meet new standards for payment and interoperability, or had stopped working altogether. The result is a more accurate network that reflects what drivers can actually use. According to data published by AEDIVE through EFE on September 14, 2026, the new figure of 52,746 points is still 5.49% higher than a year ago, showing that the network is growing even after the audit.

The Spanish government’s new Marco de Acción Nacional framework, released on September 14, 2026, reports 42,318 public charging points and a total installed capacity of 2,269,170 kW across the country.

While the total number of stations fell, the share of high-power chargers is rising quickly. In the first half of 2026, stations delivering 150 to 350 kW increased by 26.85%, and those above 350 kW grew by nearly 20%. So even as the network shrinks on paper, its real capacity and speed are improving—especially in Catalonia, Madrid, Andalucía, and Comunidad Valenciana, which now have almost 59% of all public chargers. This regional concentration is backed up by recent industry reports and independent portals that track public data from MITECO.

Arturo Pérez de Lucia, AEDIVE’s director general, puts it simply: “The raw number of connectors is no longer enough. A low-power point and a high-power point count the same in statistics, but not for drivers.” He argues that only by tracking installed power, uptime, and regional spread can Spain’s charging network keep up with the growth in electric vehicles. According to a recent ANFAC industry review, as of mid-2026, more than 56,000 charging points were operational, but about a quarter—some 17,821 points—were out of service, highlighting the ongoing challenge of reliability.

The August audit was more than a numbers exercise. It meant cross-checking operator assignments, removing duplicates, and deleting records for stations that had gone offline or failed to update their systems. Most of the cuts hit AC (alternating current) infrastructure, where older equipment often lags behind new requirements. AEDIVE’s overhaul now brings Spanish reporting in line with European standards, using Big Data and the AFIR regulation to count only active, compliant points.

An independent portal based on MITECO data showed, as of September 10, 2026, a total of 12,194 physical charging stations, 43,546 active connectors, and 3,964 ultra-fast points (≥150 kW) in Spain, providing a detailed view of the network’s regional and technological distribution.

For drivers, the impact is immediate. The days of arriving at a mapped charger only to find it dead or incompatible are numbered. The new approach means only live, working points are listed, and the network’s numbers will now go up and down as stations are upgraded, fixed, or retired. Fluctuations are expected, but the trend is clear: reliability and power matter more than just counting every plug.

This reset comes as Spain’s car market is changing. As reported earlier, rising vehicle prices and stagnant wages are pushing more Spaniards to rethink car ownership, making public charging even more important for those who do switch to electric.

According to Google/SpainAuto, the new figures are the result of months of coordination between AEDIVE, charging operators, and Red Eléctrica, leading to a real-time map that shows only what’s actually available. Inflating numbers for political or marketing reasons is out—at least for now.

Spain’s move to focus on quality over quantity in its charging network is overdue. For years, the headline number of “total points” hid a patchwork of unreliable or outdated infrastructure. By showing the real numbers and prioritizing high-power, accessible stations, AEDIVE is forcing the industry and policymakers to face the facts. The next test is whether this new transparency leads to a network that can actually support the growing number of electric vehicles, or if the numbers game will just start again in a new form.
