As of 3 November 2026, NTX was the latest vehicle registration series recorded in Spain, according to the figures cited in the source material. The Directorate-General for Traffic’s official magazine, Revista Tráfico y Seguridad Vial, also listed NTX as the latest registration series on 4 November 2026. The sequence applies to cars and motorcycles, and a registration stays with its vehicle throughout its useful life.
The next milestone could be the letter P. It may arrive before the end of 2026 or during the first months of 2027; the timing remains unconfirmed.
Spain’s current format dates from 2000. Each registration combines four numbers with three letters. Vowels are excluded, as are Ñ and Q, to avoid offensive words and combinations that could cause confusion. The system allows 80 million combinations.
The change removed provincial codes. Earlier systems tied registrations to a province: the first used a letter or letters followed by numbers and remained in place from 1900 to 1971. A provincial alphanumeric format followed, adding four digits and one or two final letters; it lasted until September 2000.
The first vehicle registration recorded in Spain followed the first regulation requiring vehicles to be identified, which took effect on 17 September 1900. On 31 October that year, a Clément quadricycle with a Dion Bouton two-horsepower engine and a weight of 130 kilos received the Baleares plate PM-1. Its owner was José Sureda Fuentes.
Road registrations serve a different purpose from competition titles such as Marco Aguilera’s 2026 GR Cup Spain win, covered in our race report.
