Spain will witness the first full moon of summer, known as the Strawberry Moon. The phenomenon peaks late on June 29, appearing larger and lower than usual. Clear skies and low light pollution will be key for the best view.

The first full moon of the summer, known as the Strawberry Moon, will be visible across Spain in the final days of June, provided weather conditions allow. This astronomical event is expected to draw attention due to its timing and the unusual position the moon will take in the night sky. According to the portal 'Star Walk', the peak moment for observation will occur on Monday, June 29, at 23:57 GMT (01:57 local time in Spain), when the moon will appear especially large and sit lower on the horizon than is typical for a full moon.

Visibility will be nationwide, but experts recommend seeking out areas with minimal light pollution to fully appreciate the spectacle. The moon will be completely illuminated, as it will be in its full phase and reflecting the sun’s light directly. While the main event is set for the night of June 29, the Strawberry Moon will also be visible, though less bright, on the nights of June 28 and June 30.

The name 'Strawberry Moon' has its roots in the traditions of North American indigenous tribes, who used this full moon as a marker for the wild strawberry harvest. Despite the name, the moon does not take on a pink or orange hue. Its appearance remains similar to any other full moon, typically white or slightly yellowish. Alternative names such as 'Rose Moon', 'Honey Moon', and 'Mead Moon' are also used in various cultures to describe this lunar phase.

As noted by 'Star Walk', the most striking views are expected around moonrise, close to local sunset, when the moon’s low position can give it a temporary golden, orange, or reddish tint. This effect is caused by the atmosphere scattering shorter wavelengths of light, allowing longer red and orange wavelengths to dominate when the moon is near the horizon.

For context, the Strawberry Moon is the first full moon following the summer solstice, which typically occurs around June 21. Full moons have long served as reference points for agricultural and cultural calendars worldwide. In Spain, astronomical events like this often attract both amateur and professional observers, especially in rural areas where light pollution is minimal. The next notable full moon event will not occur until late July, making this an especially anticipated occasion for skywatchers.
